Found some pretty paint at Lowes!
Well, long story short, I've been wanting to do a color-shifting paint job on something, anything really. So we found a can at Lowes that matches the bike decently. Did a test spraying on my helmet, forgot to clear it because I was too excited to remember to do it. It still turned out good so I went ahead and did a few parts on the bike, this time remembering to clear it properly.
Would anyone be recommending a new paint job for the whole bike done this way? I'm loving it, but would like more than my biased opinion.. haha.. |

That would look pretty cool, especially if you DiNoc carbon fibered the black plastic panel, undertail, etc.
It's hard to pull off the color shifting paint scheme unless everything sort of melds together but Ford did it.

Yeah do more of the bike like this for sure the blue and purple on certain angles doesnt look too great i think with more of the bike done this way it would tie it in a lot better. And like ducducgooseit said colour coordination is key so get rid of the bright green cables lol...this is all IMO of course and also if i were u id get rid of the fender

But the green matches all the green LEDs I've tied up all inside of the fairings... That and blue/blacks blends in, I want my cables to stick out visually. Eventually they'll all be green.. when I find green wraps/shrinkwraps.

I love my brake lines! Thinking about powdercoating the black part on the brake rotors lime green if that's even safe/possible. Wheels will get done lime green too whenever I find out how much it'll be. The can is ... 14.95? and one can did both brackets, I did layer it on pretty thick.. maybe 3 or 4 coats. It says more coats means more dramatic effect, so.... yea. It could start running expensive when I get around to the whole bike, but I suppose it's cheap when compared to professional jobs?
Speaking of painting, I am gonna have to lightly sand the painted fairings/tank before I prime then paint right? And Tiffany, I don't think I've ever seen red to black, but they do make red to gold, red to green, and red to blue. You can check out auto paints at tcpglobal.com. That's where I look when I get the urge to want to try to paint our car.. |

You should be sanding ALL the parts you paint, just make sure you get all the sanding dust off the part before painting.

Yea, I remember it too. They had... silver to green, red to blue and a 3rd color shift. Originally I had want to do a flame job on my white grand marquis in silver to green haha..
Edit: Well, clear is dried to handle so I brought it in for the night.

Front fairing and rear plastics are sanded gonna try and prime them tomorrow. Side fairings are off and getting duct tape put on in place of the electrical tape I used to secure the wiring of my LEDs. After that I'll sand those as soon as I can get the decals off somehow. Tank is still on the bike, it was too late tonight to try and figure out how to pull it off for the first time. Is it possible to take off the tank with gas still in it? Its only 1/4 tank, so I can just run it dry if I need to.

It just slides up and back once the two lines, two bolts at the rear, and electrical connector for the sender are disconnected. Be sure the place it up on some wood blocks to keep from damaging the petcock.

Well, the rear pieces and the front fairing are drying. I ran out of primer on one side fairing and haven't started sanding the other. Tank is still on the bike and will stay until I get the other pieces put back on and I buy more primer. I'll get pics up tomorrow when the clear finishes its drying time.

Parts on bike:
Fairing decals finally off.. gonna go out today sometime and get some primer, finish priming them. Tank: This might be my hang up .. .. I read the DIY about removing the tank. And I'll read it again just to double check... and I figured it out Tank is off and decals removed and sanded down waiting on primer.

That is coming together nicely. Are you planning on a clear-coat?
Removing the tank is easy. Since you have already gotten the front, and tail fairings off, you clearly have the skills to take off the tank. It is just 2 bolts. You just have to take off the hoses, and unplug the fuel gauge sender. A little trick I do, is cut a finger off a rubber glove, and zip-tie it on the fuel hose, so you don't get fuel spilling out. It isn't a biggie if you do, since it isn't a lot, and sometimes it doesn't happen at all, but it is a good precaution. I did a DIY a while back for a simple, but very functional and secure, tank holder. You will need to keep the tank suspended, because of the petcock underneath. Most people just balance it on 2x4s, tire, etc. But an hour of building will give you an awesome platform for many projects to come. If you are interested, it is right here: http://www.ninjette.org/forums/showthread.php?t=70006

I would def recommend a color sand, more clear, wet sand and buff, but otherwise it looks great!

Yea I got the tank off, have it sitting on a laundry basket so it's up and not sitting on the petcock. Its sanded and have decals off and ready to be primed when the weather cooperates.
Did the color really end up looking that rough? I wet sanded the primer flat, color sanded and 3 heavy coats of clear .. I didn't wet sand the clear, should I go ahead and do that, or? I haven't gotten to buff any of it yet, we don't have any good paint polish in the house. Was going to go get some when the whole thing was done and buff and wax it then.

It could be the camera but if you did the other stuff a decent final wet sand and polish would have it show worthy. I really do like how it looks now, the color shift hides imperfections well. Good job thus far, I can't wait to see the rest
