CDI wiring question
Hey guys I have an 89 bike and the CDI crapped out for the second time on me. I ordered a new one off of ebay and they sent me a CDI for a 95-2007 bike. After some searching it seems like I can swap pins in my connectors and add a resistor to make this thing work on my bike. The only problem Im having is that the wiring diagram for both bikes tell me the wire colors but I dont know which wires go to which pin. Has anybody done this before or could you maybe get a picture of the connectors for a 95-2007 box.
Thanks guys |

You can't make that work on your bike. It's not just the pins, but the stator also. For $25 shipped my bud can get you a working one from an 88/89. Plug and play, no mods.

It will work by re-pinning the connector wires, it is the 1986-1987 that won't because of th stator rotor and it having two pickup coils and being analog.
As he has searched for and found, there is one extra wire that is needed with that gray wire. These are label up view of igniter connector pins. * = switched power through resistor Might as well post this one too.. Anyone see any mistakes on my diagrams, let me know. I would check why you are killing igniters. I would think you have other problems with wiring or a safety switch that makes the igniter look dead. Have your old "dead" igniters still? I'll buy them cheap so I can test them, since I am not that far from you. Very curious what is dying on them. |

Thanks el250, Im going to go give it a shot right now.
If you want my old ignitors you can have them. I don't know what was killing them but the guy at a local store told me the newer ones should be more reliable. I tested the old ones per my manual and the resistance values were way out of line. |

Just to update, I swapped wires and soldered in my 100ohm resistor and she fired right up. Good info in this thread

if something keeps going bad, theres probably a reason. check your regulator output voltages.

Resistor and extra wire is only needed if going from a 1988-1994 igniter to a newer igniter and you have 1988-1994 ignition switch and wiring harness.
1995 and newer ignition switches have the resistor under the plastic cap in its wiring. If switching to a new igniter on 1988-1994, the resistor goes between a switched +12vdc to the gray wire pin on igniter. IMHO, 1988-1994 igniter are the better igniter. If replacing, to a third party igniter (BRT) or to FI controller, there is no need to worry about the resistor since it is only a Kawasaki (well actually, denso) anti-hotwire feature. |
