blown transmission?
a few minutes ago was on my way to work... wot, clutchless shift from 4th to 5th, then it slipped out... click click, boom. gear shift lever wont turn either way. stuck in false neutral. makes odd clicking sounds as i rolled it up a mile hill to work. havent had the chance to take anything apart yet as it literally just happened. ideas?

How big was the boom?
Sounds like a bent/broken valve. What is with you and all these bike problems? LOL

engine runs fine. its definitely the transmission. shift lever wont move. clutch seems to work fine... i think the shift fork or the dogs on a gear are busted.
i think its funny when people try to say clutchless shifting is bad for these transmissions when they were designed to work that way. also what do you mean motogp riders dont use clutchless shifting? yes they do

Check your gear shift assembly and the gear shift linkage by the generator cover.

I think he ****s with stuff so much that it just breaks. Not that he's messed with the transmission but the whole bike is kind of a whore/mutant at this point anyway

the linkage is clear, i have the sprocket cover off and the shift tube going to the fork that connects to the gear change drum looks straight, but wont rotate. i think something broke off inside and is stuck in the shift drum with it between gears.

for a while my rearsets were adjusted ****ed up and i missed a lot of shifts. i think that did the damage and later on (this morning) the damage finally caused some real problems.

clutchless upshifting is how a sequential gearbox was designed to operate. poor shifting technique and missed shifts cause damage regardless of gearbox design.

Sounds like a shift fork is broken . This is not as bad as it sounds. I have removed the trams at the track in my van. And still went out and ran at record speed. I also blew up my trams and got a new one on e bay for100 bucks.
You have to drain the engine. Pull both side covers and then the water and oil pump. That will give you access to most of the shifter stuff. If you don't find anything. Drop the engine and flip it upside down . There are a bunch of 12mm bolts and a couple 10mm bolts both top and bottom under the oil filter and under the starter. Once you have all that apart the case will split. Clean everything before you split it. Can you do this?? Do you have a manual? |

because when done right, it's faster. Watch my 0-60 video. In the first attempt, notice how much quicker the 2-3 shift is than the 1-2 shift. I used the clutch because I forgot not to the first time. The third attempt is the best example of how quick clutchless shifts are. Both of those shifts were without clutch in the third attempt.
Yessir. I see NASCAR guys doing it too when there's a camera in the cockpit. |

When all the bolts are out the case half's fall apart easy. Do not force it . I it is stuck there is still a bolt in it . Good luck.

got part of the way through but need to go buy the clutch hub removal tool thing... stupid thing spins and i cant take the hub nut off without the tool. the shift fork looks unbent but i cant see it clearly until get the hub off though. maybe theres a trick to getting it without the tool, but its 20$ at cyclegear, so i'll just pick it up on my way home from work tomorrow. so far the engine seems to be in great condition.

Getting the hub off is tough. You will need an impact gun. Definitely get the tool and try,But you can get the stuff apart without it. But it is much easier if it is put of the way

I don't agree that the Ninja 250 transmission was designed to be clutchless shifted. I have never seen anything from Kawasaki saying that. Do people do it? All the time. But its a lot of unnecessary wear and tear on the transmission - especially if its not done perfectly. Unless you are racing, it has no purpose.
Odd, but this is the second blown Ninja transmission I've heard about in a month. Fortunately its rare and the parts are cheap (supply and demand). Here is a complete gearset for $35. I suggest you use the clutch from now on or buy a scooter.

Cars has synchro mesh transmissions. They are not meant to be clutch less shifted but you can do it. Motorcycles have a constant mesh transmission. Clutchless shifting is perfectly fine when done right. The factory does not need people trying to learn the technique Ina motorcycle under warenty.

I bolded the part about being done right. True, but it can lead to problems when done wrong. Doing it wrong is abusive to the transmission. And its a lot easier to do it wrong. If the bike jerks even in the slightest, its being done wrong and the transmission is being abused. ![]() Except for racing, what does it buy you? Nothing.

You are correct on all accounts, but some times in traffic I just do it. So far I have never ground a gear. But like you said doing it wrong is abusive.
