Just ran out of gas :(

Just ran out of gas on the ninjette. Luckily I have some friends nearby who can bring me some. What are your guys horror stories of running out of gas, if any?

I have been meaning to check how far my tank will take me.
But I'm too nervous about the whole run-out situation and don't exactly want to put a moltov in my backpack.

Just reset the distance counter everytime you put gas, that way you have a rough estimate on when to fill it up

Running out of gas suck!!! I posted my story somewhere here on the forums couple months back. Anyway, here it is again I went up north to fresno over memorial weekend. Its about a 4 hour drive up north from southern California. The gas gauge on the ninja 250s are notoriously inaccurate!I go off by my trip meter and usually fill up every 180 miles or so. On my way back home, I was approaching 140 miles on my trip meter. I thought I would get another 40 miles out of tank. So I kept going and passed all these creepy little gas stations. I wanted to go to the nicer ones where there will be lots of people lol (watched too many horror movies) I knew the nice stations were there right before heading up the mountains on the I-5. Next thing I know, there was no freaking power to my throttle. I was forced to pull over, check my gas tank and nothing! I was stranded in the middle of NO WHERE in the hot sun surrounded by farmlands and crops lol. I got off, hung my brand new helmet on my mirror and started pushing my bike down the interstate. My helmet then falls off from the mirror, rolls down the I-5 and I had to chase after it. So not did I only run out of gas in the middle of nowhere, my new helmet is all scratched up :'(

everyone driving would just pass by and look at me and not bother to help. I texted my wife, told her I ran out of gas and stranded in the middle of no where. I had no idea how far the next gas station was. It was hot, i was sweating and the bike seemed to get heavier by the minute. I would walk about 50 yards or so and rest and repeat. It was hard because i had my backpack on, plus my gymbag strapped to the back of my ninja that had all my clothes and stuff. About 20 minutes later, a guy on a hayabusa came to my rescue. He lives in the area and said the closest gas station was like 10 miles ahead lol thank GOD he came. So he took off, came back with gas in a small bottle. I filled up, rode with him to the gas station and filled up my gas and I offered to pay for his gas. I was also trying to give him money for his help but he didn't want it. He said to me, "Don't be an asshole" haha he was nice enough to help and I was very thankful. So yeah, thats my story. Filled up and rode all the way back home to LA :0)

I have a strange suspicion that there is still plenty of gas in the tank when that gauge says empty.

You need to be on the sidestand for the gauge to be accurate

gauges are always wrong. use your psychic powers to tell how much gas is in the tank. it works for me, i only run out of gas every other week.

on the plus side, pushing the bike is a great exercise.

It has a fuel gauge and a trip meter, that's good enough for most competent people

Yeah my 2012 is supposed to have an indicator light when I'm low, but it didn't come on. I felt like a douche bag, especially sucked because I was near an ex's house and her dad drove past and gave me the stank eye.

i usually fill the tank every 130 miles, whether or not there is still any gas in the tank.

That way, I'm safe, but if I hit 130 miles and there's no gas station near, i'm not gonna run out either!

Are you sure? It has a fuel gauge, but I hadn't realized any of the new-gens had an additional indicator light as well.

The current gens dont have a reserve tank? I keep being reminded every day as to why the pre gens are oh so much better. That's what you get for trying to make a 250 look like a supersport.

I reset my trip meter every time I fill up since my fuel gauge is broken, I can usually go around 225-250 miles a tank but always fill up at the end of the workweek at around 180-200 miles.

90% sure. There is a little light that lights up when my bike has the key in the ignition.

I don't think that's a low fuel indicator; it's likely the low oil pressure light. Post up a pic and we can confirm.

Hah, I lol'd at that picture. I forgot that the international sign for low gas was a thermometer submerged in liquid. Sorry bro I had to Although it is kinda their fault for putting it in the gas gause bezel. I can see how newer drivers would confuse it.

More on topic, I never trust my gauge, it's a pos. Thing stays at like half full until it slams to empty. I always use the trip meter. Fill up around 220 miles each time.

this has happened to me a few times now...

1) On the highway far from home. I was lucky to have Kawi Roadside assistance, called em up and sent a tow truck with gas in a jerry can. I paid em 4 bucks for the gas and was on my way. If you have no roadside assistance its 60 bucks just for them to come to you then however much gas you need.

2) On the way to school. This wasn't too bad, sister brought me gas and I was on my way.

3) On a local road, luckily a gas station was only a block away...pushed her on the sidewalk, sweating buckets...

4) On the highway again, 1 exit from home. Luckily there was a huge lane wide shoulder for me to relax while I baked in the sun. Friend brought me gas and I was on my merry way.

Just for the sake of completeness in case this thread pops up in searches, the FI models sold in other markets from 2008 - 2012 do have a low fuel indicator, but do not include a gas gauge. I'm not sure we know yet whether the new 2013 model will include a low fuel indicator for either the carbed or FI versions (or both).

If you have that light come on, you have bigger problems than an empty gas tank :{P

Ran out of gas in the car last night. Range meter was WAY off after putting a gallon or two in at a time for the last month to coordinate a family gasoline discount. I'm mad because I often had to get expensive gas and the discount totally isn't worth this!

I have a pregen so dont have this problem, but has anyone tried doing a resisitor mod? I know on my concours 1000 the gauge was crappy, after doing the mod it helped it. heres the link I used, maybe someone should try it and see if it can be done?

I ran out of gas about a month or so after I got the bike... I was still within my 'normal' trip distance (I normally go about 180-200 per tank and it was around 160), so I must have been on it a bit more that tankful than I thought... I was on the Highway, but luckily it happened right before an offramp! Sadly, the gas station was on the other side, so I still had to push the bike up to the top of the overpass, but then hopped on and coasted down to the gas station...
