Have you read your owner's manual?
If not, you should... cover to cover.
It contains lots of great info one should know about the vehicle they ride. Some really lame stuff in there, but some very important stuff, too. So... have you read your owner's manual? ________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________ EDIT by Alex: New-gen owners manual: link Pre-gen owners manual: link Last futzed with by Alex; September 9th, 2011 at 08:36 AM. for sure....it would save a lot of people from asking questions on this site and learn to do all their maintenance themselves and save a lot of money.

I did the same thing as well. I read it from cover to cover and then wrote down all the serial numbers in the space provided. I do that with everything I buy even if it's something simple like a toaster. |

after delivery, i stared at my bike, sat on it and started it up once (couldn't resist). turned it off and read the owner's manual cover-to-cover before touching the bike again.

I even photocopied the section which ask you to write down your key number and filed it at home. I wasn't going to write the key # in the manual cause it's in my back seat for quick reference. If someone stole the bike well at least they won't be able to make a spare key.

I was super excited about ANYTHING that had to do with my bike, so I read the manual and the little riding safety booklet as soon as I got home the day I bought it.

Some parts are a good read others are what you read on the John or when you can't go to sleep
Good information no what level you are at.

Of course I read it....
I always find it a bit shocking when folks ask a really basic question that I know is answered in the owner's manual, such as "What tire pressure should I use?" or "Where is the battery?"

what am i the only honest one and said no?!?!
the owner's manual...thats the one that usually comes WITH the cycle...right? my bike didn't come with one and since i've obtained the maintenance manual, i haven't thought about getting the owner's manual...so nope...haven't read it, but have scoured the maintenance manual if that counts for anything!

I'm with Steve on this one. I got mine pre-owned, from a private seller. He didn't have the manual. So I haven't read it either.

I bought my Ninja before I had my motorcycle license, so I took the manual with me from the dealer before I took off with the bike. So yeah, I read the manual, and I'll re-read some sections when I'm doing some maintenance of my own.

Yup, read the oldgen and newgen manuals the first day I got them. Makes for good bathroom reading material
And definitely some good insight esp before all these DIY posts popped up. Tire pressure, chain adjustment, oil change etc. etc. all the simple stuff that you can easily do yourself and still feel proud of doing at the end of the day. |

err... No... I didn't... Not cover to cover. I am not good with manuals... Technical stuff scares me.
I did/do pay very close attention to the maintenece schedule That is a creased spot in the manual. Also I did read the sections on where everything is and how to check the oil (Cause that is important).... I'm a slacker I know.

The owners manual is not very long and has a ton of good information. I have not read it cover to cover but I do know what is in it. tire pressure, how to change the oil, clutch cable adjustment. I have referenced it often.
The service manual is just that and is quite large. More indepth and techincal. When someone posts asking what the tire pressure should be or how to check the oil window and If they have a new bike I am pretty sure they haven't even cracked it open. It would be quicker for them to read that then post a question. The DIY's in the forum are awesome also !! I recommend to be like Sunny and Know what is in that little book!!

I never got one, so I didn't read it. The first thing I purchased for it, other than Yoshi pipes, was the maintenance manuals. I have looked through those. I'm working on a spread sheet to keep track of my maintenance on the bike. That way I will have a running record of all maintenance done and what is coming up.

Cover to Cover.....well actually cover to middle seeing as the second half of the manual is the same thing but French.
A lot of things your suppost to check before going riding I ride atleast every third day so i don't do the checks as often as it recommends but about once a week.

Awesome poll kkim. Cover to middle, like all the other Canadians and the MSF book (which is odd because we don't have MSF in Canada, it's called something else).
The only users manual I haven't read is the one for the Mitsu cage... damn thing is the size of a bible.

Went to my dealer today to pick my broken piece and told him i did my first oil change already. He said that in the manual it says that the dealer is suppose to do the first oil change or it can void the warranty but he said he would cover me it anything goes wrong in the future. I told him I did not see that part in the manual. Also told him that i did everything to a T, torqued and everything with no leaks and saved the receipt for the oil and filter and recorded it in the book. Told him i was looking for Rotella T synthetic as it is scarce around here and he didn't seem pleased about me using that kind of oil for some reason so i just bought the kawi synthetic instead.

Read your warranty as to what you can and cannot do. The warranty in Canada may be different from the US.

I believe that Canada and the US has the same manual cause i recall the section on sticker placement and it showed the ones that the US models have and we do not.
