BREAKING: Friend Who Just Got Motorcycle Already Dead
http://www.theonion.com/articles/bre...eady-de,29685/
The Onion News BRIDGEPORT, CT—Moments after purchasing a new Kawasaki Ninja 250R, your friend Pete has already been killed, bystanders outside the motorcycle dealership have just confirmed. "Boy, that didn't last long," said bike salesman Chris Varrick, adding that “no more than 10 seconds” after becoming a bike owner, Pete lost control of his motorcycle, collided with an 18-wheeler, was flung approximately 30 yards, and died upon impact with the pavement. "He handed over the check, thanked me, and took off down Jackson Road. And then he died." At press time, Pete's younger brother, who inherited the bike, has also already died |

Not too funny, considering many of us have had friends who have passed away recently on their bikes.
Let's be a bit more considerate.

Geez, I got a mini heart attack when I read this... Maybe I'm getting too jumpy, but bike accidents really scare the S**T out of me and I'm much rather not have that extra pressure on me always while riding. Losing Alex was bad enough and reading such posts really makes me nervous. Sorry if I'm being overly sensitive and emo about this...

I think posting this here was in extremely poor taste. The Onion is a comedy/satire web site, so reading that headline on their own website I would understand it's a joke on the Onion, but seeing that headline as a subject line on a motorcycle forum - for anyone who has been riding for any amount of time - is just totally inappropriate.

I hate the Onion, mainly because of people like the Op who then take the titles and repost them on forums/twitter, which results in lots of pissed off people.

It's only funny until it's about things you have an interest in huh?
I wonder if this in the print edition of the onion, I'll have to pick it up and clip it out |

Satire is apparently lost when it's applied to a serious issue.. so basically everything satire has ever been applied to.
Course "the onion" should be included in topic title.

I don't think the point is that it's satire, the point is that it was posted to a motorcycle forum where people do have friends who have died recently.
The Onion is fine, they make fun of everything from religion to 9/11 to cancer. The thing is, would you go to a cancer support group forum and post this headline there just because it involves cancer? http://www.theonion.com/video/a-frie...-health,14131/ I don't think the article is a problem, but posting it here in the way that he did was in poor taste, IMO. |

Bridgeport doesn't even have a Kawi dealer. I know. I lived there for 25 years and now live in the next town over.
Yeah, the bit is tasteless and offensive. But then again so is most sarcastic humor, at least to someone, somewhere. This one just happens to be a hot button for us. God help us if we all start walking around looking over our shoulder for the political correctness police. We started down that path in the 80s and thankfully it never stuck. |

If the title was "friend just got corvette, died from crash" no one here would be offended....
Isn't that interesting?

This is obviously a touchy subject on a motorcycle message board because we all have experienced a crash one way or another, and just knowing that someone finds it funny that people die from motorcycle crashes everyday is pretty saddening.
With that Corvette example given earlier, you have to wonder about this: If this were posted on a 'Vette forum, would anyone get offended? Probably not. But I'm pretty sure if someone mocked a Corvette owner dying in a crash on a 'Vette forum, it wouldn't be seen as a very good joke. Just my 0.02 |

As soon as the first line of the post showed the Onion, I realized it was a joke. Funny or offensive, it was fake and I read it as such. Strangely, I was thinking Pete's younger brother would be revealed to be named Repeat (like the kid's joke).
Regardless, in an environment where the joke situation can be uncomfortably real, having some notice it is a joke might be appropriate. Just my two cents. And WTH was that Robot Chicken on crack video that I just watched? @Jiggles how do you FIND these??

@Jiggles oh I do, catchy little tune there, plus I had seen it before. I was just concerned about how deep that rabbit hole went. You do tend to collect some ... unique videos. Much as I like flirting with the edges of the realms of Chaos, diving head first into their Court is not my idea of a good time. LOL

i got a rly good laugh and enjoyed the satire, because this is how many non riders thinks it works. many think the second u buy a bike its a death sentence and ur dead in 2 weeks tops. i wont argue its more dangerous to ride a motorcycle bcuz if u wreck ull prly get injured worse, but i got a rly good laugh bcuz many people believe this make-believe senario to be the norm.
