Oil Filter Wrench
So I just tried to do an oil change on my 1000 which uses cartridge spin on filters like the 300, only, the stock one doesn't have a way to come off. You need an oil filter wrench in order to get the stock one off. The 300 also uses these spin ons right? Anyone want to check if they also require filter wrenches?

There's no reason to have to tighten an oil filter to that point. If you can't get it off and don't have any kind of wrench to get a hold on it just stab a screwdriver into it and loosen it that way. I had to do that on my dad's bike because whoever changed the oil last time really cranked down the filter. I couldn't even loosen it with the oil filter wrench I have.

I have done the screw driver through the filter idea in the past when all else fails but it is messy. The oil filter is super thin so thats easy to do. If you cant unscrew it by hand go to walmart and buy a cheap oil filter wrench. A lot of the socket types are plastic because it shouldnt take much effort to get the filter off. Of course there are heavy duty ones as well. Some are plastic |

I attempted it by hand and it wouldn't budge. Looked on a ninja 1000 forum and people said it seemed like a 500lb gorilla had tightened the oil filter on there. I'm guessing for the first oil change, by hand is not going to happen. For later oil changes I'll have the filters with the nut for ease of use.
I'm going to guess that the ninja 300 has the same type of oil filter on it and if its torqued on at the same rate that the 1000s are then its not going to be possible to do by hand. So, for the noobs, get an oil filter wrench if you don't have one

Jiggles, always buy a K&M filter for your track/track use bikes. Or at least check to make sure it has the nut at the end of the filter. It makes safety wiring much easier.

Take screwdriver, stab filter, twist, remove screw driver and take off old filter. Install new filter finger tight then 1/4 turn.

+1 the stock filters suck ass, just use a screw driver and punk it through the upper side of the filter and rotate it off. Then only buy K&N after that and problem solved

I just did my first oil change on the 300 and went with my handy plastic oil filter socket from walmart to take mine off the easy way. Like you said Jiggles the factory sure likes to put those filters on tight.

Try wearing a rubber glove, should let you grip a little better. Also if it it on that tight I would remove the fairing to remove it, just encase you/wrench slip. Don't want to risk breaking/cracking fairing. Have fun.

I did the first oil change on my 300 last week and the filter was indeed installed by king kong. I went to O'Reilly Auto Parts to buy a socket wrench. It just slipped on every ridge and wouldn't budge. I ended up having to remove the lower right fairing and use filter pliers to get it loosened. Unfortunately for me, I purchased three Kawi filters from the dealer when I bought the bike.
I'm assuming when the mileage is right, T6 is just as good for the 300 as my new-gen? |

I know this is an old thread but try investing in one of these and see if it helps you out. I bought one when it was on sale for $5 and this is what I use for my car.

I also picked up a filter wrench that looks like a giant pair of Vise Grips. Big jaws on locking pliers. It ROCKS and has yet to be defeated. As often happens, on my GSXR the factory installed the oil filter tight enough that it defeated every wrench I had… fiber strap, metal strap and the useless three-fingered widget. Not this. It actually started to bend the can before the filter began to loosen. This tool handled it with aplomb. And it cost seven bucks.

Depends on how tight the filter is.
You can twist with your hand til the cows come home and that filter isn't going ANYWHERE if it's on too tight… which it almost always is from the factory.
