He Did It On Purpose
So I was approaching a round about (we have a clock tower in our town) and I was going 50 and had to slow down to 30.
Up ahead a little bit there was a corvette. It was later at night and there's no cars anywhere in sight so I figured he was going to drive past the yield sign like anyone else would. So I look down to check my speedo because I wasn't sure what gear I was in so I couldn't determine the speed based off of engine sound, I look up and the guy slams on his brakes FOR NO REASON AT ALL 10 feet in front of the yield. I look up within 25 feet of him and hit the brakes. Lucky me, the next day I was going to buy some tires because I have like no tread, so my bike low sided and then the guy sped off. My bikes fairings are trashed, along with my turn signals and mirrors and my brand new area p exhaust got scratched So right now I have ordered some aftermarket fairings, flush mount turn signals and integrated turn signal mirrors. The new fairings look sweet. And I'm not going to have to repaint my tank =) But overall, not a good day...

I go up to every round-a-bout with my finger on the horn button (bike) or hand on the horn (cage) specifically to teach the other people how to use a round-a-bout. As soon as it looks like someone is about the treat it like a 4-way stop by stopping when there was no one to yield to, I lay on the horn. Not needing to stop is the WHOLE POINT of a round-a-bout and yet I see people mindlessly treating it like a 4-way stop day after day. Some people aren't just cluelessly stopping: They are actually sure that you are supposed to because they see everyone else doing it every day. I've even been honked at for "taking" someone else's turn.
You do have to understand that they aren't that common in most places in the USA and even if they are where you live it may be an out-of-towner encountering it for the first time. Expect them to stop, react accordingly, and then teach them not to in order to make things better for them and everyone else. Last futzed with by CZroe; October 25th, 2012 at 12:08 PM. |

You have been riding for just two months and have already had your first mishap. I am very sorry to read about it, but it is kind of a normal thing for the first times of learning to ride. I wouldn't ride at night if I still would have to look down to check my speedo to select a gear. Try to read this book, available at many public libraries: "Proficient Motorcycling: The Ultimate Guide to Riding Well" by David L. Hough http://www.amazon.com/Proficient-Mot...t+motorcycling Your eyes must be looking far and forward 98% of the time you are riding. Please be careful and learn all you can, you are only 17. Best !

Sorry David; Matthews is from Central Florida and I got confused.
The driver didn't do it on purpose, most of the drivers are just ignorant or distracted. Keep an eye on them at all times and be ready for evasive maneuver or emergency braking.

Hey so you realize if you didn't panic and lock up the brakes you wouldn't have crashed right?
Ok good.

Doesn't matter. You're still a good example of how hard it is to stay calm and react during traffic surprises. Take it easy on the dude.

Yes Sean, crashes are a learning experience. No way to learn without realizing what went wrong. But that doesn't mean you can't be realistic about it, without being that dude behin a keyboard who says something to the effect of, "oh it's simple, you're an idiot. Just sayin." It looks like he panicked and grabbed a lot of brake and lost it. That's an SR. Congrats to David, he's now experienced in what that SR feels like, and it won't be a surprise next time.
Akima, yes. Badass level 1 attained. Moar soft padded ditch crashes and you'll keep leveling up! |

Ok so, he thinks his bald tires caused the accident and so far no one has said no, thats not why the bike lowsided (unless of course it was wet out, in which case, dude, dafuq were you thinking!?)
He crashed because he grabbed too much front brake too quickly

@Jiggles: your assessment seems reasonable to me. I'm guessing David grabbed the front brake really quickly. David: you've got to slowly and smoothly pull in the front lever.
What does this mean? I have to be sick on my suspension? |

And he did THAT because he got distracted and needed to emergency-brake, which he admitted to and understands. He learned one lesson that will avoid getting into that particular situation ("don't assume"), but there are many more places where proper emergency-braking may be needed, so we agree that he needs to learn that one too. That said, it is possible to be in a situation where it is too late to stop without either locking up the tire and crashing into the other vehicle or running into the other vehicle while upright and braking with full traction. It's usually only possible to get in that situation by not paying attention (entirely dependent on when you became aware) or out-riding your headlights/visibility, but not always.

bike will flip well before you lose traction or lock up the front trying to brake... if thats not the case, there is either something wrong with your braking technique, your brakes, or you drive on ice or something.

Jiggles must be 65 and has been riding for 47 years because this guy doesn't make any mistakes apparently. As a rider for 2 months I could sure use the wisdom from a guy with that much experience being perfect.
