Sprocket Setup
So what would yall say is a good sprocket setup?
When I get my bike I plan to do a trip up to my sisters college a good 400 miles away. I hear that with the stock setup long highway rides can really vibrate your hands and heard that a new sprocket combo can help that. |

Thanks. I Understand the basic mechanics of it all but does anyone have a specific setup that they like?

The most common, cheapest, and easiest, is to go from the stock 14/45 to a 15/45 setup.

15/45 was nice, I use 15/41 for highway and I think I'd prefer 15/43 to keep things at a nice mix. 15/41 you'll notice a decrease in accel but once you get to the top of your RPM range it feels nice. 6th gear, for me, is a joke, no accel whatsoever and I'm usually in 5th chillin, or even 4th on windy days. We'll see what thing spring brings my bike, perhaps if it gets more power 15/41 would be even nicer on the HW.

Personally I've been running on a 15/47 ever since I've had the bike and I love it, some people may argue the rpm's are high on the freeway, since this is my first bike though, I truly don't know any different so it doesn't bother me one bit

Scattcatt, 15/47 is nearly identical to 14/45
45/14 = 3.214 47/15 = 3.133 not going to be noticeably different from stock. |

It's pretty nice, I never experienced the stock gearing so I can't really speak for it, and I'm not sure how much of a difference the fuel injection makes since I didn't try this with the carbs, but in first gear riding on the streets at around 9-10k rpm if you let go of the throttle completely so the front forks depress then quickly floor it to WOT, that front wheel will lift off the ground without jumping on the forks, I was surprised at least. I'm 6' 210 pounds though, so a lighter person might be able to pull a legitimate wheelie off with a jump/pull on the forks.

I think that's partly the Fi. I've never had that work for me except up a really steep hill, and I'm 135. (although I'm also on a 130/90-16 rear, which is the almost the same as going 15/45) I'll definitely give it a try once I go back down to a 130/80-16 rear this season and get used to the 14/47 gearing.

I would like to retain the stock setting but my owners manual does not have the specs mentioned. Could you please let me know what are the stock chain and sprocket (front and rear) specs? Also I ride mostly on the open highways but cruise at 70 mph and sometimes crack the throttle wider to go faster. What would be an ideal "upgrade" in the sprocket to make the bike accelerate faster yet not be strained at the above mentioned speeds? Please let me know the pro's and con's of this "mod" job. Thanks. |

Stock in the US has been 14 tooth front, 45 tooth rear. Supposedly it is different in Australia; not sure what the stock ones are in India. If you go taller on the gearing, it lowers the revs for a given road speed. If you go shorter, it can improve acceleration in the lower gears slightly.

I might switch to a 15/44 setup to switch things up a bit...

in aussie the sprocket setup is 14/43 which is perfect for 100kph/62mph and below.
15/43 would be better if you are cruising 100kph+ gearing commander use 250r brazil 2011-2012 |
