Gen 2 tank swap to pregen
Can I swap a Gen 2 tank to a pregen frame without much modification? I have an 04 with a horrible tank and i'd like to swap the tank. Are there any tanks available that will fit without major modification?

Try it and report back. I've never seen an 08-12 tank off the bike in person, and have never heard of anyone attempting a swap, because I'm pretty sure the fairings would not match up at all.
@CZroe might be able to help a little though. I know he has both generations of ninjette. |

I was looking into this too and "rabies" said the rear tabs are bent different. Maybe just bending it downwards would do it, or getting the tank bracket. I looked up the frames on eBay, sadly that's the easiest place to find pictures of things, and the front posts for the rubber things look like they're the same location on the frame, and the rear bracket looks like it's in the same location. Obviously, I'm just eyeballing it from pictures without measurements.
The 08 tank looks nicer, but people want too much. I found a much less banged up tank reasonable, just has a butt shaped dent in the back...

It isn't a straight swap but I have seen it done. I'm having trouble finding the thread. I remember having trouble finding it the last time I needed to look it up too.
*sigh* If only we could tag threads with search terms! Edit: Here it is: http://www.ninjette.org/forums/showthread.php?t=47456 Pics are gone. |

I wish this thread had pics! I'm not concerned with the fairing issues as I will be making this a fighter. Just need to get a gas tank that is not beat to hell, like the one that's on there now. I'm even more interested in the new gen take because of wiring up a fuel indicator!!!

I have a black 08 tank you can have. You just have to pay the shipping, it is a cali model so it has the emmissions crap. it also has a dent on the side as well, it still works perfectly well though. I'll get you a pic if you are interested. I did take off the gas cap so I could use it on my new tank.

I wanted to do this swap as well. I thought I saw a picture of it done once, but I don't remember if there was modification involved or not. Excited to find out.

even though I went ahead and bought a pregen tank that was in better shape than the one I had, I am still very interested in seeing what a 2nd gen looks like!! I need to get this darn thing running before I start playing around with mods!

As for your fairings. It's entirely a no go on getting them flush. The tank literally hold the fairings up on current gen bikes. In my case i be actually upgraded to the newer fairing also. The frame... The frame... You'll have to cut it.<----that's a period Good news though, it's super simple and super cheap. Harbor freight angle grinder a metal cutting disk. Afterwards I highly recommend painting up the cut to avoid rust. The bad about cutting is you REALLY SHOULD weld the cut piece back in or else you will lose out on overall structural integrity and handling.again this is the downfall, however it could be taken care of by a machine shop relatively on the cheap as its straightforward. I'll post pics when I get home. It will help to explain. |

Also the reason behind cutting is the fuel petcock aligns with the frame. I feel this was nothing more than a conciseness decision by the designers to thwart an easy change to the newer style fairings and tank.

Maybe instead of cutting the frame, a different petcock could be made to fit, or the rear of the tank lifted up, which would be easy to do if you had to make a different tank anyway. The seat could be a bit of an issue though, getting the transition right. Or the petcock could be moved, just weld up the old holes and braze/weld a bung on somewhere.
The idea of cutting a vital component like the frame to achieve an aesthetic modification seems asinine.

Assuming everyone who would attempt the modification can weld, or weld correctly, is asking a bit much. Even then, a weld isn't as strong as the parent metal.

Who's assuming? As with any mod, you don't procede if you don't have the tools. Also, the strength thing is only true if the welded part was previously solid, cut, the re-welded, but not if you cut one welded structural piece and added another.

You can cut it directly at the weld. And weld at the cut if done properly. I know I probably sound like hot air still not having pics up but I'll do it tonight.

fuzzy pics I'll retake
Some pictures of the bike currently. Again its not much and I've been hibernating on the whole thing. You'll notice I've went ahead and made the cut and cleaned up the weld. I'll post some pics of what I used for reference.

Any chance that the petcocks swap between generations so the cutting isn't necessary or is the problem more about the location of it on the tank? |

Looks mostly like a positioning problem.
