My rebound machine!
2013 R1200RT, loaded with virtually every option available other than the low seat / lowered suspension. Top box gets here on Tuesday. I have it wired up in a kludgy style for GPS & heated gear, which will get me through next weekend's ride. But a longer-term plan for all necessary gadgets & farkles is being put in place quickly.
Gallery of all of my pics. Specs on BMW's site. Link to catalog Hope to put a few miles on it tomorrow, and then break it in properly all next weekend.

Just looped around Calaveras on the new scoot. I never should have cheated on it. Love the riding position, love the handling, love the suspension, love the gadgets, love the fact that you can feel that the motor is running through the grips without it being the least bit bothersome. Brakes felt soft for the first few miles, but the pads seem to have bedded in a bit, and felt great by the end of the ride. Same with the shifter, which felt notchy/clunky yesterday, but after adjusting the lever and putting some miles on it today has really loosened up and feels much smoother. It immediately feels more agile than the bike I've just written off, which isn't hard to understand when you look at a wheelbase that is almost 8" shorter and a bike that is carrying 150 less pounds.
Not a fan of the stock tires on this bike, the same Metzeler Z8's that BMW is putting on a number of their bikes now. The grip feels OK, but I don't like the profile much, and the transition from grip to no grip isn't as progressive as I prefer. Can't wait to burn through them and put on PR3's. This bike has a cubbyhole in the top of the fairing, but not as large as the older RTs, so it doesn't look like I can fit a cycle pump in it. I did remove the foam padding in it, which just let me fit a SPOT tracker in there for today's ride, as I don't even have a tank bag yet. While the uber-integration of the control wheel on the K is nice, I think I prefer the individual buttons on this bike for things like the heated grips / heated seat and even the ESA. It's just quicker to get things done than continuing to scroll through multiple pages of features. The RT has the same control wheel, but it pretty much only controls the audio system here. Happy to be riding again, and looking forward for a whole pile of miles/smiles on this one.

Got some confirmations on which parts to order, and am down to the last little bits to convert this stock RT into a capable long-distance mile-muncher that will hopefully serve me well in this summer's Iron Butt Rally. Here's a copy of the worksheet I'm using to keep track:
There are undoubtedly things I'm forgetting, but this should hopefully be the bulk of it. Most of this is ordered, and I've received some of it at the house already. Most of the electronic installs will be laid out / outlined by me, but the actual work will fall to a particular tech at SJBMW. They do very clean work, and I've been quite happy with how things have worked out on all prior bikes there. Hopefully I can get this all clearly laid out in a way that requires very little do-overs, which has happened on prior bikes when adding things piecemeal over time, rather than in one large build process. For now I'm going to leave the shocks as is. They are the ESA II system, and they feel pretty good out of the box. I'm somewhat worried about their longevity, so if warranted I might get to the Ohlins setup on this bike like I had on the '05. Loved the way those behaved, and wouldn't mind them again. Also have no plans to modify exhaust or any other performance changes, other than rotating to Michelin Pilot Road 3's when I burn off the OEM Z8's. Stock exhaust sounds surprisingly good, with a flapper valve that opens once at higher revs/higher throttle.

And yes, while it's a brand for old farts, I still liked this video.

The Skene additional brake lighting flashes when the brakes are applied, so there's no need to have the main brake light do the same; it might be overly distracting.
I think at some angles the front wheel does look small, as the fairing is so wide at that point.
