F%#k...... Someone drew a line. Guess the fun is over.

I am cool if you guys are.

I guess I should post at least one thing related to the actual topic....................

3D printing will have an impact on the average person as much as the interwebz has. It may well revolutionize commerce in ways not yet anticipated. You know... the Law of Unintended Consequences and all that stuff.................

I was thinking the same thing. I assume we all remember when downloadable music became available and the music industry had a meltdown. They're still trying to figure out how to deal with it. I would guess that the same thing will happen soon with 3D printing. If the technology progresses to the point where we can all buy the printers relatively cheaply, why should I pay for anything made of polymer anymore?

In our case, we lowside our bikes and scratch the fairings to hell and back. Why pay a couple hundred for replacements when we can just print out new ones?

It's going to be interesting to see how companies figure out how to continue to sell their product when the consumer no longer necessarily has to buy it.

I see it much in the same vein as mp3s......... My reference to the Law of unintended Consequences was the fact that if this becomes cheap and widely available i can see the Fed Gov't stepping in and using it as a excuse to greatly broaden their control and censoring of the internet. Imagine..... one person buys a newfangled screwdriver, scans it to a file and no one ever has to buy that screwdriver again. Major corporations out of business in the blink of an eye. Economies crash, world is thrown into chaos, dogs and cats living together................ scary stuff.

It would test the economies of scale, shipping, and manufacturing.

A lot of simple manufacturing would become a specialized market, but the raw material markets would grow exponentially.

People kind of thought the same way with cnc mills.
At first it ended up being too hard for average person to use.

Once the software got easier to use they kind of took off.
They only thing holding them back are the raw material costs and tooling.

Reprap machines are a lot easier to work with and require no tooling.
I'm looking to raise the temp of my hot end to flow pewter.

I have a 30 year old LaMachine 1 and about 2 years ago the spacer thingy that keeps the slicer at the top of the doohickey was broken by my nephew. They stopped making that part (I know, hard to believe so soon). It is like 2 inches long, easy right?

The bed and extruder is aluminum, it'll handle the heat just fine.

It'll work for well enough for small prints but large ones might get warped

If anyone's interested in things other than guns

I got my printer working, only for a few days now, I need to dial it in, but it's churning out very usable parts now.

Please excuse the quality, crappy iPad camera.

EDIT: My next step is to model a Garmin Nuvi mount, I am thinking above the dials below the windscreen, design it so it wedges in and can be secured by a single bolt through the windscreen.

Wouldn't let me see if it had been sold or not beacuse i'm not 'merkin.

You would need to make a 3D model of it, but if it comes in contact with food, a 3D printed part wouldn't be food safe due to micro holes and such on the surface that would trap food particles and bacteria.

You could just buy the eBay one above that Alex kindly posted, to make a 3D model you need 3D modeling software, 123D Design, Blender, Maya, Google Sketchup etc, your best best would be to pay someone to model it on etsy, and send the file to shapeways.

honestly its probably not very easy to print that piece without using a lot of supports, and the keyway looks like i has narrow tolerances.

to save on supports, you would have split it into two halves and glue or print it upside down.

No I need that part, not badly because I do know how to use a knife, and I was excited about getting it for $2
It is a intricate part and I was not sure what a printer was able to do. Making it in two pieces is likely how it was originally made. Now please go away and stop your tolling.

the printer will do whatever you tell it to.
but it won't be $2, when you factor time, machine wear, programming, and assembly, shipping, and tolerance checks.

not trolling just being real
