Won't start... :( HELP!
Ok... I tried looking at different threads and had no luck finding a solution. Maybe you guys can help me out...
My 2006 Ninja 250 stalled on me when I was on the freeway. I think it was because I ran out of fuel. I looked inside the fuel tank to see if I had some fuel in there and there was a little bit (but not much). Anyways, I tried starting the bike and it would crank, but not turn over. I continued to try to start it and finally NOTHING! I mean, it won't even crank! I pushed my bike in the emergency lane for about half a mile until I was off the freeway. All in 100 degree weather in Pleasanton, CA. UGH! My question is: By attempting several times with the ignition button, did I kill the starter? Luckily, I had a friend that was close by help me 'bump start' the bike to get it to a gas station. I had to 'bump start' the bike after the fill up and rode it back 40 miles to San Francisco. So why can't I start the bike the normal way? What the EFF did I do to my bike? Anyone? Please help... |

You most likely drained your battery.
How long did you push the starter button for? |

So my battery is shot? I tried to start the bike this morning and could hear a click from what I'm assuming is a relay or solenoid. It's only one click (not a repetitive clicking). It won't even crank. Is it just my battery? Can the battery be saved by charging it or do I need a new one? I checked the voltage on it and I got a reading of 12.6...

your battery maybe fine, but when was the last time you replaced it? btw put in an external fuel filter that is clear so you can visually see the fuel.

I bought the bike used and I'm assuming it is the original battery. Previous owner didn't have any service records... I did get a reading of 12.6 when I tested the battery. However, I tried starting the bike and all I would get is a click when I pressed the start button. No starter crank... no other sounds... just a 'click'. What else could it be? I'm kinda a newb to motorcycles and its mechanics. Is there anything else I should check? |

after letting it charge it should read around 13.8v if it doesnt come up to 13.8 and you have good fluid levels then the battery needs replaced. i have a battery minder and it can revive some batt's but most replace theirs about every 3 or 4 years if not every year if they dont start it on the off season

I'll let it sit with the battery charger and hope that it starts up tomorrow... keeping my fingers cross until then! If I get no change in status, what should I proceed on checking? |

So I forgot to charge the battery last night... So, I decided to just jump start the bike. I connected the booster cables... switched everything on... and NOTHING! I couldn't jump start the bike! Why can't I start my bike??? My other question is: Wouldn't a battery kinda recharge itself if I rode the bike over an hour? Please help... |

The next day after this incident is when I checked the battery voltage and got a reading of 12.6v... I checked all the fuses (including the one on the main relay) and connections... all seem to be ok. When I turn the bike on, the indicator lights come on along with the rear tail lights, but not the headlight. I have not installed anything new on the bike... |

headlight will come on when engine is turned over. Start with checking starter relay.

No because your engine will still turn over, try to jump it from the starter......connect the red/POSITIVE CABLE TO THE NUT ON THE STARTER( look at picture) and touch the other to a ground

12.6 is a sign of a low battery. but could also be symptomatic of a dead cell. it you cant get that battery up to above 13volts time for a new battery. its possible the fuse blew when you attempted to jump it. just be warned your motorcycle probably wont charge much even after riding for an hour.

So I've tried jumping the bike, both by 1)connecting the booster cables to bike battery and rear brake lever, and 2)directly to the starter bolt. Couldn't get my bike to jump either way... just strange to me even if the battery is a goner. I was able to bump/push start my bike again just because I felt I needed to ride it... (and I did for 2 hours). Still can't start my bike the normal way! What else do I need to start checking while I wait for the new battery to arrive??? |

I get a single click, not the repetitive click... I'm gonna try putting a jumper from the posts of the solenoid to see if it cranks.

one click might mean the connection between the main wires and the battery are not getting enough contact. try loosening it, wiggling it and tightening the cables to the battery.
