what do you recommend...?

I will be going to a trip in west palm beach in 2 weeks. I've been looking around to see if I can find a camera to take with me. I love the gopro, but I can't afford it right now..

what cameras can you recommend? I'd like to be able to attach it to the helmet or the bike like I've seen on those youtube videos.

budget: $180

If you are on a tight budget try finding older versions of the GoPro, Contour, etc. you may not get all the bells and whistles the new ones have but my older Contour GPS still had good quality despite being a discontinued camera.

I have a Hero HD 960, aka a Hero HD that can only go up to 960P. Quality is okay, night recording is sh*t, I personally dislike the mounting system, it's pretty bulky on a helmet and catches wind no matter where you put it.

That being said, like chone said the Hero 2 would be the best value.

I've literally heard nothing good about the Hero 3s, aside from the fact the picture/video is amazing when they actually work, which doesn't seem to be often.

Drift makes the best helmet cams IMO. And they actually have a screen on them, go figure!

I've just started putting my hero 1 on my helmet and I don't notice it at all. That's also doing 300mi of freeway and fast twisties.

Get the hero 3 I linked. It's $200 shipped, brand new, wifi, slim, and it does amazing night shots. You don't get the cool frame rates that the black edition has but screw it, you don't need that. The hero 3 white is a fantastic deal

I also like the drift hd ghost.. I like how small it is and flexible.. Am not trynna make movies or anything. I might be able to get an amazon store card which would enable me to buy any of the two. According to the site, it says I will have a 6 months interest free as long as I pay the item in full within that time limit. I might be able to do that in august since I will be getting some extra cash.. i dnt know, plus it could be a good way to help build my credit I figured.

I was at Wal-Mart last night and hanging next to the GoPro was a Midland XTC ### (something) with a waterproof case. Going for $89, slightly smaller than a Contour.

A quick Google search suggests it might be the XTC 205 with

720p HD Resolution
140 Wide Angle Lens
Weather Resistant
30 FPS Video

I know nothing about it, but it is closer to your budget.

Dont waste your money paying retail for the H3 White. In fact, dont even consider buying it if its on sale. It has a 5mp camera.

Contour Roams are pretty awesome and cheap.
One of the main reasons I paid a bit more for the Roam2 was 60fps @ 720p when I go shooting.
I have found mine to be awesome, I would expect the same out of the original.

Some of us finance the most ridiculous things, just to build credit. Heck, I put some of my utilities on my credit card, just to use it to build credit. I mean, I pay it right away, but I still am technically financing my under 20 dollar water bill.

Understandable. I put everything on my credit card because its safer. But I don't carry a monthly balance which is what he wanted to do for a camera which just seems a bit silly. I wouldn't go into debt for something unless it was vital. Just my $.02

I look at this way: The camera I really want I can't afford it right now, but I want it for my upcoming trip. so, I'd get it on the card, and pay for it in full before I'm charged interest. In the process, I'd get my camera for the trip and still help my credit a lil bit.

You're right, I didn't read it all correctly. I don't like doing things like that, I always feel like if I finance something then something will go wrong with my financial situation, especially if you are already in a position where you can't afford 200 bucks. Might have something to do with when I bought my pickup truck, got the loan, (cosigned by my dad so if I missed a payment it hurt him too) and then two days later, I was laid off. FML. But I did get it paid off, with no missed payments, and learned my lesson.

I financed my ninja too, since I needed something that would get good mileage for a new job, but I was really nervous about doing it, especially with a brand new job. I really don't like doing that kind of stuff.

So yeah, you may think nothing of financing 200 dollars, but if you can't pay it all off right now, what happens if you don't get the hours you expect at work, or have another unexpected expense, and can't make the payments? Think of what happens to your credit then. I'd save the money, and then if you want to help your credit, finance it and pay it off with the money you already have.

That's pretty much how I feel Tim.

If the money's not in my bank account, the credit card doesn't get used.

Get the hero 3 I linked. It's $200 shipped, brand new, wifi, slim, and it does amazing night shots. You don't get the cool frame rates that the black edition has but screw it, you don't need that. The hero 3 white is a fantastic deal
I might be able to get this one.. I saw it at the local walmart. what do you know about it. I've watched some tests on youtube, the white doesn't look too bad.

Actually it looks like crap on youtube, all videos do compared to the raw footage
