Can I safely learn to wheelie?
It seems like anybody whos anybody can wheelie on a motorcycle, so why can't I? I've felt like a bit more gas and faster dropped clutch would have popped my front up a bit several times when I'm gasing from a stop. Seems like the 250 can pull it off, and I've seen it on youtube!
My questions are, can I go out into a safe open area and practice getting my front off the ground a bit? Is there a good method to go about this? Do I NEED lower gearing on the 250? ect. I figure its better to ask here and be told I'm a moron, than go out on the street and let the pavement tell me I'm a moron. |

the best way to learn is to take off all your plastics, and then try it out. i tought myself how becuase alot of the riders around here would be like "you cant even wheelie" so i finnaly said **** it and learned. do yuo have a pre gen or a new one? i only know how on a pre gen, here is how i do em.
so first of WHERE YOUR GEAR! now that thats out of the way here is what i did, get yourself in a nice flat abandoned parking lot. make sure you have a strait away that has like a 10 parking space wide area. first you want to get into 1rst and take your rpms up to about 8k and keep it there at that time you will kinda squat on your pegs with your but about an inch or two off the seat and pop the clutch (let go of the clutch handle fast,) this will let you do a baby wheelie, something like 1-3 inches of the ground. doing this will help get you comfortable to the lunge that happens when you pop the clutch. after you have gotten this down the next thing to do is go higher on the rpms, i found that 11k will get you a good 2-3 feet off the ground once you get the hang of it. remember that no matter how high your rpms are you will not do a wheelie if you ease off the clutch, you gotta let is snap out. remember that when you go into the wheelie you will be kinda standing up never try it while just sitting because it will make the bike lean to one side or the other making you crash. remember if you have to do this be as safe as you can with it, read up on what do do when things go wrong cuz they probably will. if you get to high ease off the throttle a little if you start to lean to a side ease off the throttle while leaning foward in the opposite direction. i am no pro, i have done maybe 20 real wheelies and all of them where from a stand still, moving wheelies scare the troll dolls outta me. hope it helped

best way to learn is on a small cheap dirt bike. its all about the balance point and getting the bike up there and no further. The 250 ninja has no problem doing a wheelie and also has no problem looping a wheelie if you don't know what you are doing. However you can not just bring up a wheelie while riding down the road or highway like a SS can. Wheelies on a 250 ninja are pretty limited to first gear at super slow speeds. BUT people that practice a lot and generally wreck a lot as well do get really good and once they get the bike up in 1st gear they can shift while on a wheel and continue to higher speeds.
In short, you want to wheelie, get a cheap dirtbike that is easy to fix and doesn't cost much to fix either and who cares if you dump it 100 times they are built to take a beating.

you can do small wheelies on the 250 but the engine isn't built to be off angle too long.
i would not leave it up longer than a few seconds... that said, i wheelie like a squid on every single race start.

As it's been mentioned here several times now, the best way to learn to wheelie or do others stunts like stoppies, is on a small dirt bike. Like the smaller the better, 50-80cc is just fine. You can pick one up for a few hundred bucks, which you can easily rack up in damage if you crash your ninja.
Learning the bikes balance point, and becoming comfortable with the front wheel in the air is the important part. It's a lot less intimidating to learn on a small bike, and the bikes are meant to take a beating. The ninjette is not a really a good bike to wheelie on, though it can be done. Sportbikes in general are more difficult to wheelie because of the weight on the front wheel and having more power helps. I'm far from an expert, and I don't even try to wheelie my 300. Pretty much keep it to my dirt bike or supermoto. Once I learned the proper throttle/clutch technique it became a lot easier as well. I used to just pull the clutch, rev the throttle, drop the clutch, and pray. This is the wrong way to do it. Now I start by going about 20mph in 2nd gear, then give the throttle a good twist, a second later I pull the clutch with two fingers just enough to make it slip, then pop out the clutch. It helps to be on the pegs as well on a underpowered bike. Just make sure to cover the rear brake at all times. Once you get more comfortable you can then start upshifting while doing a wheelie, best way to do this is clutchless. If people give you crap for doing wheelies remember, haters gonna hate, just be prepared to take some sh*t if you crash.

If you dump the clutch you can do a wheelie. I did one or two and I was kinda "meh." I was going to try them when I had all the plastics off but I got bored and realized I didn't want ticketed + doing them in an abandoned parking lot was stupid.

^ that's an interesting photo, I wonder if it was staged in that the rider literally did 3mph around the turn then dumped the clutch in first to get the wheelie.
That is about the only thing I can figure because if the rider took the turn in second gear he would have to much speed coming out to dump the clutch in second and get a wheelie that high.

I'm guessing that photo was staged. He probably started the wheelie going pretty slow.
That might be good for a 250..., but I did a power wheelie down the street yesterday on my 125.

The wheelie in the pic is not that great, it is fairly low. But yeah on the little 125 2strokes those things wheelie pretty easily. I remember my 05 yz 125 I could get it to wheelie in 4th gear with no clutch no problem. Just shift the weight a little when you get in that power band sweet spot and it would come right up
