Oooo new tires

Just got some new tires in. Cheaped out and went with Shinkos. We'll see how they do.

And mounted

Never tried Shinkos before. As cheap as they were I'm not expecting much, but they have to be better than the 12 year old, squared off tires that were on it.

Let us know how they turn out..I've had 3 sets of Pilot Powers after Metzelers and Bt-45's. I can get Shinko's for 80 bucks less than the Pilots and I expect them to last longer. I figure the 250 isn't a performance bike and anything is better than the stock tires...

200 mile update

Weather hasn't been great for riding yet, but I've managed about 200 miles so far on these tires. No real hard riding yet, so the cornering ability has yet to be seen. First impressions:

They do well in wet conditions. Much of the 200 miles on them has been on wet roads, and they haven't made me nervous yet.

They do well on the highway. No vibrations and track straight, even on rough pavement.

On ice they are terrible. Shocking I know.

I will try and update this as I rack up the miles. Maybe get some pictures as they wear.

I had the 712 on my pregen before and it ran great. They are more than decent tires. I currently have a 140/60 shinko 006 on my 2010 and it handles like a dream. I've only had it on for 200 miles thus far though.

1000 mile update

The tires have 1000 miles on them now. I've been very pleased with them. Riding has been in temps from 28 to 75 degrees f. They corner nicely, have good wet traction, and seem to have good traction during hard braking. Ive broken the rear loose while braking, but I really had to try.

Wear for the first 1k miles has been very little.

I just picked up some Shinkos as well. I got the 740's for both front and rear. My original plan was to get BT45's but apparently they stopped making them for the pregen....
That's what the store told me anyway.

Regardless, I've heard good things about Shinkos as well so I'm looking forward to trying them out.

I really can't do a fair comparison between these and the stock tires, because the original tires were very old and worn when I bought it. The closest comparison I can offer is to some pirelli sport demons I had on a honda vtr250 (similar to the ninja).

So far I feel these tires perform every bit as good as the sport demons I had on that bike. I never really push the limits of a tire, but for my purposes (commuting/touring) I think these are at least as good. I will see how they wear over their life, but so far I would buy these again.

I will update this in a few thousand miles.

No, stock pregen tires are Dunlop K630's. They're terrible. Any tire is better. FWIW, IRC road winners inspired a tad more confidence on my friend's new gen than the K630's did on my pregen. I still like BT45's and Diablo Scoots better.

From the looks of that very wide chicken stripe it looks like you do lots of leaning.

What I was trying to say is that it looks like you have been using almost all of the tread. Most people have a skinny chicken stripe meaning most of there ridding GIS upright.

I think you're backwards Rick.

Chicken strip is the edges of the tires that never get touched. Wide = no lean angle. Skinny = lean angle.

But chicken strips are no indication of your riding ability anyways sooo

My bad. I misunderstood you. Funny thing is most of my riding is upright. I use my bike mostly for commuting and touring. In a few thousand miles these will probably be nice and square

3000 mile update:

I am still completely satisfied with these tires. The traction is very good, even in the wettest conditions. I have also used them a good deal on gravel and dirt, and have been impressed. They have held up to a few runs of 3 hours or more on the interstate, fully loaded with camping gear, with no issues.

And now the photos

The rear is just starting to square slightly, but that is to be expected. My riding is primarily highway. The front shows little wear if any. I suspect I will get a lot more life out of these.

So far these tires have proven to be an amazing bargain, and if it continues I know what my next set of tires will be.

5000 mile update

5000 mile update:

I still have no complaints about these tires. They do well in all conditions, and I haven't noticed any deteriation of handling or traction.

Front still shows very little wear. Rear is squared off, but appears to have quite a bit of life left.

these tires are an amazing bargain

Wow that's doing great for 5000 miles. My version of 6000 miles + 3 track days is a tire that's on it's last legs with ~1mm in the center and very squared off. Guess that's what I get for buying a sticky rear.
