Helmet decorations
Yeah, strange thread. Let's see what happens.
Does anyone have any stuff they put on their helmet for cosmetic purposes? Along the lines of cat ears, dog ears, rabbit ears, fake hair, spikes, devil horns, ram horns? I've been considering putting some cat ears or devil horns on my lid, nothing rigid or detrimental in a crash, and purely cosmetic. Something like this perhaps.. |

I made these simple horns with some sculpey, black paint and rattlecan clear. Attached them with riding cam tape. Total cost: 4 bucks.

I haven't personally done anything cosmetic to my helmet but I have seen some interesting things. From Super Grover, to Cookie monster and Bumblebee, besides the usual mohawk.

This thread has me thinking of doing a helmet more than ever... Just have to get a new helmet, but what's a super Grover? The Cookie Monster ones are pretty cool

Apparently I'm not the only one to come up with this idea.
I'm not sure about cat ears anymore, they would look like some batman wannabe helmet methinks. I'm liking the horns, now I've got to find someone to buy my old helmet so I can get a new one in black... These are all good ideas. Anyone else try anything like this? I like the unicorn helmet but I'm not sure how safe it would be. |

So lemme get this straight.
You can get a mohawk on your lid, origins trace back to a tribe but you can't get a coonskin topper on your lid. I call discrimination.

Doing anything too large runs the risk of it flying off in the wind and/or affecting the aerodynamics of your helmet. I kept mine very "soft" and smooth and never have they felt as if they were going to come off.
Don't ever be tempted by "screw ins". They'll make your helmet nigh worthless in a crash. I'm all for adding little things that make it personal but keep it safe. And don't worry about the troll in this thread. Everyone knows helmet horns add like 5 horsepower.

I was at a stop light today and a little girl rolled down her window and yells, "I LIKE YOUR HELMET!" and I gave her a thumbs up.
Worth every pissy judgement some other rider makes. but I will agree that the cheapo cycle gear mohawks are crud. I've seen a few "nice" ones but they are few and far between.

Nice horns, daks.
I don't really get the mohawk thing, it just looks a little funny to me. Looking for something that inspires a small degree of fear in other drivers, and serves to inspire them to give a larger space cushion between other vehicles and the bike. Has anyone mounted flashing blue lights on their helmet? Unfortunately it's not legal here but would certainly garner more of a 'presence' for the motorcycle and it's rider. Maybe I need a chrome helmet... Auto-tracking-laser-pointers-that-self-target-the-retinas-of-oncoming-traffic? Headlight modulator? How can I catch more attention from other drivers for the sake of safety? Edit -- apparently I'm an aggressively defensive driver. |
