Hahahahahahaha, pull up a chair.
So my wife is 41 weeks pregnant and she gives me the nod it's time to go. So we load up and head to the hospital. I would normally, drop her off at the ER door but after 3 kids, she says "I got dis" and tells me to park in the garage. What does a guy do when their wife is in labor? EXACTLY what she says, that's what... So I park in the garage 3 levels down and pull in the space with the front of the jeep facing the wall instead of taking the time to back into the spot. We grab everything get out in a hurry and get her checked in. We have Lance! A bouncing baby boy, 10 fingers, 10 toes, happy and healthy. Stephanie (wife) is doing great too and they get the all clear to go home. YAY! Wife and I pack up some items and start to load up the jeep. She hands me 3 bags and tells me to go load them up. And so it begins.... I grab the bags and keys and head to the garage. After leaving a trail of items down the hall, a nurse chasing me down to give me my keys (also dropped), I finally make it to the jeep with everything. I press the button on the keyring to unlock the doors and nothing. No lights, no clicks of unlocking of the doors. Hmmm, I figger it's the battery in the remote and unlock the doors manually and load the bags. At this point it's lunch and their is a primo parking spot near the ER door that I could get. So I hop into the driver's seat and try to start the jeep up. I turn the key and NADDA again. I look down and I had left the lights on. Darn it!!!!! Cars on both sides of me, I am parked front first into the space against a wall and I gots no AAA. I know... there is a K-Mart down the street (1 mile away). I will just run down and get a portable jump start and be going in no time. So I take off joggin in the Aug. heat. I finally arrive at K-Mart totally sweaty and looking like I have been rode hard and put away wet. So I proceed to the car isle and find a reasonably priced portable jump start and pick it up. "Ready To Use" it says . Now on the way out I see the bike rack with this big huge sign that says SALE Dispay Only. The sign is on this honda mountain bike. The bike says "Honda Racing", the way I figger the wife is wanderin' where I am about now, it's been a while and riding a bike is faster than walking. So I look the bike over and decide to buy it to ride back to the jeep. lol The tires are kinda flat but I don't have time to wait for the stock boy to fill them up so I push the bike to the checkout and pay for my items. Off I go! Riding through the K-Mart parking lot toward the hospital. The hospital is 1 mile away, up the hill, it's 97 degrees, 98% humidity, in lunch rush traffic, carrying a portable jumpstart all the while dodging people on the sidewalk, cars turning into drive-throughs, while pedaling uphill, steering on handed. Of course I am not dressed to ride in the heat or anything like that either... Along the way, a cop pulls me over (WTF) for not having a light on the bike. I tell my story and he gladly lets me go on my way with a note "your tires are almost flat". I finally get to the tough part of the hill and I just give out, lack of sleep, the heat and the metal part of me just says f* it. So I end up pushing the bike 3/4ths of the way back to the jeep while carrying the portable jump start. The whole experience took much longer than I thought it would. After jump starting my jeep, strapping the car seat and moving the car to the ER doors, I arrive back to the wife's room. She is less than happy to see me after taking so long. She says "Let's just go", she calls the nurse to bring the baby and a wheelchair to escort us to the door. Of course, I get loaded with about 6-7 more bags and some flowers like the pack mule I am feeling like. At this point I had another great idea! I will take the stairs down and have these bags loaded before she gets off the elevator. Surprisingly enough that plan worked and I am sitting in the jeep with it running when the nurse pushes her out the ER doors. The next look on my Steph's face was priceless. The mirrored ER doors open and what does she see? A blue jeep with a red bike strapped to the top with a few bungee cords, some shoe strings and a few red shop rags. Steph simply just says "WTF"!!! She looks at me funny and says... "I don't even wanna know." Aside of a few whimpers from the baby, the ride home was nice and quiet. To this day, my wife will not let me park front first into spaces in the parking garage. But Hey! I got a race bike for $89.

best bike purchase story ever. the redneck touch really helped in making it hilarious too, referring to the bike on the roof. Its a jeep you couldn't take the front wheel off and fit it in the back?

Not touching snow. Last time I had a bike out in snow, I ate it and dislocated my shoulder. I'm having trust issues right now with the bikes because this happened in early December and I've not ridden much since. I need seat time.
@csmith12, remember when you crashed and said that all your problems were in your head and you weren't fast anymore? That's me right now on bikes. So yeah, I am a sissy right now. ben, what does cold have to do with taking a beating? Also, have you SEEN my roadie frame? beefy. |

that was more on the wet/salty. mtb are more designed to take a beating from the elements than the roadies that I've seen/used. I'm actually tempted to claim my older bro's roadie since he left one of them here, thanks to my ninja I know of a few places within 40 miles that would be sweet downhills for it.
no I haven't seen your roadie frame, just the mtb one that you claim isn't a full build because it has a stock part. |

related, not an actual pic of the bicycle itself since I'm lazy but this is basically what my older brother's extra road cycle is, just swapped wheels/tires. I don't know much about road cycles so I'm not really sure what I'm working with, knowing my bro though it's probably a mid ranged bike. I believe the model name is Trek 5200.

oh ok, your bike has a more durable frame than my bro's then. his is carbon fiber which won't take nearly as much stress as your aluminium frame and due to the age difference yours is still a lighter bike overall. (only 1-2lbs though)

I think mine's spec'd at 19.5 lbs + accessories. idk, weight really isn't my concern. I weigh so little that I'm not worried about the bike weight.
The stress thing really depends on the design. They included safety factors during design. It all depends what the manufacturer designs around and what they deem to be 'over-designing' |

Yummy. But I'm not really fond of aero look TBH. Looks like I'm trying too hard to look faster than I am and adds weight. Deep carbon wheels look kinda overkill in an Al frame IMHO.
Also, is carbon okay to use for a DD training bike? I worry about potholes and such. I'd obviously keep my OE wheelset for foul weather rides, etc. I'd need special brake pads too. Meh. |

That Honda MTB is nice. I still wish I had my old Cannondale 26" rigid frame. It took real thought to ride that. I had to compute the smoothest/fastest lines very quickly. I loved the challenge. I did hold up quite a few people, which is why I went with a hardtail. Now, I love my FS. I guess because I have yet to ride a really light HT on a trail, so I don't know what I am missing.
Ignorance can be bliss.

I didn't know that. that's pretty awesome though.
So I finally weighed my MTB. It started out life at a very husky 34.2 lbs and is now down to 28.8 lbs. ~500g of that is off the wheels, and about 3lbs is off the fork. The rest is all the drivetrain. I'm pretty sure that Deore hydro's are actually heavier than the mechanicals I replaced, but the brakes are totally worth it. I'm content with the results of this weight loss program my bike was on |

Now that I am back in the Lone Star State I need to get back on the road bike. I have been running a bit again since I got back in Jan, 20+ miles base distance a week at training pace (7:30s or so) but as I ramp up the intensity my shins and knees are already complaining.
I need to find some locals that do a weekend morning ride or something.

So, I did a ride today. Roadie ride on the MTB. SLOW AS MOLASSES. I cracked because it was uber cold and I forgot food and I biked yesterday as well. It was just generally bad. I had to use my granny gears to get home with heavy leaden legs. :/
But I found out that my favorite hill starts at 5% and steadily increases to 20% at the peak, where it levels off. freaking hurts if you explode too soon. Or if you're like me and haven't biked hills in forever and are generally in fat season. here's my data: http://www.strava.com/activities/118009843 Avg power output - 172 W. Not bad for a skinny dude who's not used to climbing ATM. peak that I see - 238 W on my favorite hill. Not happy with that. I was dying on the 20% part. I know I've taken that hill loads faster on the roadie when I attack it with fresh legs. I love decents on the MTB. GODLY BRAAAKKKEESSS and granny gears |

I descents on a FS MTB with hydro brakes. (best decision ever, thanks again @Jason and @Jono) and slick tires.
This badboy was a little fun. See a ways down the hill where the road disappears? Yeah, that's where it drops off and gets even more fun. I road a nose-wheelie for about 10 yards, starting at 38+ mph. Then I wimped out and set her back on the pavement so I could slow for the upcoming tight turn at the bottom of the hill. You should see how beautiful this valley is in the summer and fall. I can't wait to see it again. |

wheelie >10mph on a bicycle? That's 1.possible!? and 2.doesn't destroy your front end when you set it back down?
I am not a wheelie god, and have little interest in wheelies but that's pretty impressive. |
