Talking So I'm renting a motorcycle tomorrow.

Yeah, so right now I'm in Key Largo (part of the Florida keys) on spring break , and tomorrow morning I'm going up to Miami to rent a bike. I'm planning on riding it from Miami to Key West.

Already put down a deposit, which was half the price of the rental, but I don't know what bike I'm getting. It's ok though, I like surprises.

Hopefully I'll have a choice between a few bikes, just matters what they have available I guess. The place I'm renting from has mostly Harleys, but also a few Triumphs, and BMWs. No sport bikes, but it will be nice to change it up a little.

I'm hoping to rent either a HD 1200 Sportster, or V-rod/night-rod, a BMW F 800 GS, or a Triumph Thruxton, or Scrambler.

Don't worry, there will be a full ride report with pics, I'm so excited, should be an awesome ride.

Uhh, they don't have hondas and the 1200 is only $5 more than the 883 for a day. The Thruxton, the F 800, and the Bonneville are the same price as the 883.

Yeah those prices weren't bad at all. Another place wanted you to put down a $1000 deposit that they refund you if you bring the bike back in one piece I guess.

i was recently looking into renting bikes. it's insane. like you really have to be crazy to rent a bike. i'm lucky enough to know some really great people who are kind enough to let me play on their toys.

florida thunder storms are quite unique in their intensity and terror. one minute its a nice sunny day, the next minute you're swimming. then the next minute its hot and muggy and you wonder where the rain even came from, there ain't no god damn cloud over us. it's like that **** falls sideways.

Well $140 for 24 hours does not seem to insane. You stated that the deposit was almost the same as the rate? You get the deposit back if the bike is returned undamaged correct? This is more expensive than a car but the risk they are taking is more so it seems fair. Looks like a great way to try out some different bikes and add a little extra fun to your vacation. If it is not too much to ask, What is the age of the OP. Just wondering if there is lower rates for older guys like me (43). I wish there was a place around here where you could rent a different bike once in a while just to try it out. Luckily I found a dealer (KTM, Ducati, Yamaha and Kawasaki) who allows test rides They let me take a 848 EVO for a test ride and I would like to try the R6 next time

So I ended up getting a superglide. That's what seemed to fit me the best. It's not a bad bike at all.

So I ended up keeping the motorcycle for two days. I can officialy no longer talk smack about Harley Davidson since I've had two of my best riding days ever on one. I honestly could see myself owning a Harley now, especially if I lived somewhere like Florida where most of your riding is in a straight line anyway.

So thats a good IDEA . .. Buy a brand new Ninja . Insure it full collision
Rent it to people for 200 bucks a day. and Viola pay it off in 3 months and you get to keep the bike!

its a bit of a gamble... but for a free bike haha

Naah, Daytona was pretty far away from where I was. Plus it's really not my style, haha. Believe me there was plenty of fun, and cute girls, down in Key West, I had a hell of a time. BTW I go to Columbus State, but I met plenty of OSU students along the way.

Haha, well maybe a little. I've never been much into cruisers, but at the end of the trip the superglide was feeling like an old friend.

This was my first time doing this, but no doubt it won't be my last. Here's some more pics from my vacation. Even found some guys to ride out of Miami with, which made that part of the trip much less stressful, and more scenic

The guy riding the other harley was from Vancouver and rented it from the same place that I did. The guy in the yellow pants was also from Vancouver, but now lived in Miami. He was riding and '88 or '89 ninja that had 200,000 km's on it. Still had the original engine no major work done. He bought it from his bro with 30k on it.

Yeah, I have an aunt and uncle that live in Tampa. I'm thinking about visiting them this summer to see if it's tolerable down there that time of year.

I didn't really know if I would like riding a cruiser. I also didn't know if I could handle a bike that weighs almost 700 lbs. Honestly it didn't feel that heavy, and was easy to ride. I honestly don't even think the super glide is overpriced, MSRP is around $13.5k. Being a HD it's going to keep its value better than the japanese bikes. I was looking at used ones and most people are only asking a few $k less than new.

So I've been missing the super glide since my trip, along with the nice weather but that's another story.

Anyway I thought the super glide was a nice change of pace from the ninja, which I've been riding again for the last few days. I really did like the relaxed riding position and super comfy seat of the dyna, along with the rumble of that big v-twin and the bottom end torque it had.

Now I'm looking at similar cruisers and keeping my eye out for a good deal. I'm definitely not getting rid of the 300 as it's way too much fun, but I might sell the 250 this year if I get a cruiser though.

I'd like to find another super glide, but they go for more $$$ than I'd like to spend. Older ones go for less, but I'd want a newer one with the six speed. So I'm also looking for other bikes that are similar to the dyna, a midsize cruiser with mid mount controls. The only thing I would have added to the super glide was some highway bars for your feet.

I'm looking at the vulcan 900, the boulevard c50, and star 950 as other options. Any advice on other bikes that would be similar to what I'm looking for would be appreciated.

How about a 2004 or later (rubber mounted engine) Sportster?

I dunno, I've never even ridden a cruiser before this trip, but the dyna actually seemed to fit me pretty well. I might consider the 1200 sportster, just wonder how it would feel compared to the super glide.

I sat on a star bolt today, and while I thought it looked cool it seemed kinda small. Not something I think I'd want to do a long highway trip with it seemed.
