Digital Tach
I have a different sort of idea for a digital tach. I want to take an arduino and make a digital tach with a shift light for the 250. I am in the preliminary design phases right now trying to create a schematic. I have run into a few questions that I'm hoping people will have answers for.
1. I thought I read the new gen tach was powered by a cable. So a adapter would have to be created. Or is there a wire that has the rpm being run through it? I have not looked at the wiring yet on my bike. 2. What voltage is put out at the stator? I am sure I will have more questions as time go on but this is it for now. Thanks! Kevin |

The pre-gen and new-gen speedos are run by a mechanical cable to the front wheel. But I thought that the tach was electronic on all generations of the bike.

The new gen tach rpms are run through a wire in the 9 pin harness. I want to say it is black in color, but i could be very wrong.
If you look up a wiring diagram it will tell you exactly what color it is. The only cable driven guage is the speedo. |

So looking at this diagram (which btw, I am suprised brown is on there. I think brown is actually for the left or right turn signal) you want to hook the black to your tack wire for the digital guage and then black/yellow is ground to ground the entire system. You do not need to only ground the tach.

2008+ Ninja 250r FULL Electrical Wiring Diagram here!
The black/yellow is the common ground wire. The brown wire is switched ignition power. The black wire T's off from between the igniter and coil, and is your tach signal. I'm not sure if the 250 is exactly the same, but when testing the EX500 stator, you're supposed to get around 60VAC between any two of the three stator leads. The regulator/rectifier converts the AC to DC (rectifies) and limits the voltage to the standard "12V" values (regulates). |

Subscribe. I'm doing something similar with the idea of using it as racing data logger. Would be interested on updates, especially any efforts to clean up analog signal.

I talked to an EE from a different engineering school in MKE both in agreement a capacitor is going to be worth a try.
My semester is done next week and I will be splitting my free time after my internship on this project and a few other ones i have going on. |

You may find this useful, I did a bit more looking around last night, not sure yet which design will have the best results, but implementing a simple filter like this should do the trick for tach signal. |
