good to know. I always said if I got a monster I'd get a new one because I don't want a bike that has a reputation for expensive parts without knowing whether the previous owner has taken care of it or is unloading a damaged machine that I'll have to shell out an arm and a leg for.. I wanna know exactly how its been taken care of for its whole life.
glad to hear there's a happy monster owner here! also, I read a blog last night about a girl who modified her 696 for a 10,000 mile camping trip. YESSSS i'm not alone! |

I have the Ducati gel touring seat, and it's absolutely amazing. But 10K on that thing?
Nope. I'll take the land yacht. |

I havent done any research on this topic and will admit that I have no idea what I'm talking about. I thought Ducati was supposed to be really high quality because of the name on it... Like some people wear shoes, others wear Nikes. Some people use tissues, others use kleenex. Some people drink whiskey, classy muurfukers drink Jack Daniels.
Thats not a Goldwing reference is it? IS IT?!?!?! We have a spy in the ranks!!!trust noone

guys!! the local ducati dealer was having a demo today and letting people test ride s1000rr, diavel, monster 1200s, ebr, a couple other bikes (no japanese ones)
I said I only wanted to ride the 696 but since 99% of the people who showed up showed up on bikes that weren't 250s (I am the 1%) they weren't demo-ing the 696. wasn't interesting enough I guess. BUT they said I can come back tomorrow when it's quiet and take it out for half an hour by myself. they also said my friend (who wanted to test ride the panigale but sign-ups for it were full) could come ride the panigale tomorrow. so tomorrow I have a chance to ride a 2013 or 2014 ducati monster 696! this will be my first experience on anything other than a 250. so now I can answer my own question about whether the 696 would be a good step up from the ninja 250 not that I'll ever have the money for a new one, but the dealer doesn't know that |

I've never understood that concept, my local Ducati dealerships does test rides everyday; but why would you ride something you can't have? All that will do is make you want that more then what you have now. I never even rode a 600 until I was able to purchase one.

I most likely wouldn't either. But if you buy the right model (750ss, 900ss if you're lucky, though that is more likely to be $4kish), and stay away from the superbikes, you would be surprised at the relatively low prices out there. And for good, reliable bikes as well.

To the OP.
I was in your situation last year, trying to upgrade from a ninjette to mid-level bike. My wishlist was short, since I wanted a naked twin or a triple. After test riding a Triumph STR, I ended up with getting a new '13 696 ABS. What sold me was the sound & low end torque of the L-twin, handling, weight, and build quality. Like all Duc's, there is that maintenance aspect (valve adjustment every 7500 miles) that seems scare prospective buyers. Power-wise, its enough to easily get you a ticket or in trouble really quickly. Some thoughts before you buy:

^Good advice. And congrats on your bike!
I did actually get to test ride the 2013 696. Loved it, absolutely... I just really can't afford it. Period. Hopefully somewhere down the line... If not, I'll try out the SV650. |

sounds perfect, esp considering that the '13 and newer models have a slightly more aggressive position due to lowered bars.

I have a 620 Multistrada. It is a reliable and amazing ride. Good all around and yet it handles great. If you do your own work on the bike it is not to bad to own. Order the book from Desmotimes.com about air cooled Ducati's. It is a good read. Ducati's are great reliable bikes just maintain them.

I just can't get with the new water cooled Monsters, they just seem to lack the classic simplicity of the aircooled desmo units. I need to pry my brothers Monster from him for a few weeks this summer.

I feel the same way. I'd rather just have a 796 to be honest. It makes quite a bit less power, but the torque is very comparable and it retains that air-cooled charm.
