Market for 250s shot?

Hey guys,
Is anyone else noticing this? a year ago the 08+ 250 was a huge hit. Now its so hard to get rid of one. Normally i would post my bike up and i would instantly get a million emails inquiring.

So far i got 1 guy that wants to trade me a computer and a shot gun for my bike.....

anyone else having problems like this?

What do you think is a fair price for a 2009 250r with 900 miles on the clock?
thanks

I'd say from your responses, a computer and a shotgun???

It's really geographically market driven, so what are the other bikes in your area going for?

I don't think it is the bike. I think it is the economy.

I just dropped off mine for a little tweaking and the shop had a full floor of new models. Not one was a 250 and only one ZR-6. The repair shop was stuffed to the gills with repaired ones that people hadn't picked up apparently because they couldn't pay.

I also think that you are seeing quite a few people buy new right now, if they can. It is not unlike the car market where you can get better deals new than used, if you have access to the funds.

A Core2 Duo and a Mossberg doesn't sound so bad.

Yea I noticed the same thing...I posted mine on craigslist, just to see what I can get for it, and if the price was right, I would have sold it...But I only got 1 call..And the guy was just saying how bad ass it looked with all the mods I did to it, no offer, he musta been bored....But I have an opportunity to trade it for a 07 gsxr750 with 3000 miles on it, plus 3k.....Any suggestions?..I want to go faster!!! thats for sure....

Practice and track days will get you faster,

Not to mention your going to be spending more money on tires and other maintenance items with the bigger bike. But hey if you feel like you really want to upgrade thats not too bad of a deal.

Gas prices were also a huge factor last year too. I bet it would be amazing to know just how many bikes and scooters that were bought last summer have just sat in garages this summer collecting dust.

Yes it's shot. Too many sold, to many people upgrading, the price is artificially low on the used bikes now because of it. Kawi's sales were amazing last year but I bet this year its not as big. The bikes are still popular but now you can almost open a cracker jacks box and find one for cheap.

my dealer had sold out and now has 2 due to cancellations. Economy, financing, insurance all leading to slow sales. Dealer has 3 ZX10 on the floor, 2008 green, 2009g/w/b, and 2009 orange. Save $2K on 2009, and about 2500 on 2008 green. Even though liter bikes are a less demand item, they were selling fast as they hit the showroom floor this time last year.

I don't have a bike yet, but I'm following the ads.

It is routine to see people asking far, far more than the KBB or NADA retail prices.

It is rare to see an 08 with an asking price below original MSRP. I have yet to see a bike with an asking price less than $500 over what the price guides say it should sell for.

I've seen guys asking way MORE than MSRP for used bikes (like $4500).

I think the real story is that owners are simply expecting too much.

An item is worth precisely what the market will pay, and not a penny more no matter how much the owner might think it's worth.

Lower the price to a level at which someone will buy it, and it'll sell in a day.

And that's all there is to it.

The market isn't dead. It's simply a case of expectations not aligning with reality.

I am asking 3500 for a 2009 Ninja with 900 miles...
MSRP is 4000 with taxes fees and destination charges you are looking at over 5000+ out the door.

Is my price really unfair?
thanks

From what I've seen to date, that's plenty fair.

Though counting taxes and fees and such in the original "value" doesn't seem right to me.

If you were buying a used car, would you think it right if the seller used all that stuff to make it seem like his price were more reasonable? I certainly wouldn't.

Why should a bike be any different?

I completely agree. I figure is going to go lower then my asking price anyways just making a little room for bargaining.

I would also like to point out though most cars on the market will not sell MSRP even from dealer.

I don't know what your riding season is like in Pitssburgh, but in MI right now, the summer has been less than stellar. Late July/August is not the prime time to be selling anything that is primarily a summer toy and you will never get top dollar. Most people in 4 season states buy their summer toys before or just after Memorial day if they gotta have it for summer, or at the end of the season (cheap) so they have it for the next season.

Heck, I have been looking at snowmobiles for the last month already hoping I can find a nice one "for cheap" in this crappy economy.

And another thing, people never pay extra for mods - sellers always think their bike is worth more because they upgraded this or that, but the majority of buyers don't care. You're always better off putting the bike back to stock and selling stuff like exhausts and gear separately - if you want to maximize your return. Unless you need the money now, you may want to just ride out the rest of the year with it and try selling again next spring. You may as well keep it listed on CL as there's no cost to do so - you may get lucky and find someone that just has to have your bike int he middle of winter.

Hmmm... that is too bad. At least I was planning on keeping mine, even if I upgraded (incase I still liked it better). What I can't find is the 650r. They are a myth I think. Dealer has plenty of ZX6r's, a couple 250r's (although not last year), then some other brands.

They claim they get what they get (like they don't have a say in the orders), don't know if that is true, but that is what they say.
