Then that has nothing to do about riding with out gear that has to do with being stupid. I have met lots of people who ride motorcycles with out gear and all the Harley riders have medical insurance. Id say less then half of the sport bike riders don't.

i've gotten enough road rash from a simple fall off my bicycle making a right turn. I'd feel naked on my ninja without my leathers. I have no idea how squids do it.

I Love this thread. I laughed so much. I too have ridden without all the gear at times but the older I get the less of a bother putting the gear on becomes. All motorcycle riders accept a certain risk when we ride and adding to that risk is not a good idea. I will occasionally take one of my bikes for a short ride without my jacket or gloves and the thing I mostly ride without is a good set of riding pants. The risk to me is minimal because when I don't wear all my gear I feel more exposed and therefore take it easy and act accordingly. I never take a real ride without all of my gear but I admit to a quick trip around the block once in a while. I guess it all comes down to how much risk you perceive vs the fear of injury. ATGATT is the proper thing to do and I will try to hold to this in the future (especially since I just got my full leathers). I cant believe how comfortable the full leather suit is to ride in, its like armored pijamas!!

I got road rash through my jacket on my recent lowside, I feel like I'd be in a hospital bed with an arm that would take months to heal since the rash would have likely pierced some muscle. I also have some scarring from mountain biking as a kid, them rocks can cut deep. Never fell off of a road bicycle though *thumbs crossed* |

I've been squidding on more and more of my shorter rides (<30mins) lately. I'm such a hypocrite, I swore I wouldn't do it. I'm ashamed, nobody look at me

I may as well be squidding with my jacket in the condition it's in, the left side is good but the right side is all torn up with a few holes in it. The damage didn't really show up on camera though so I didn't bother to post it. The right side from the elbow down will likely disintegrate on impact with the pavement, I'm planning to replace it when I'm able to for that reason but until then if I end up on pavement on the right side my arm won't be protected by the jacket. To give you an idea of the condition it's in, some of the skin on my forearm made contact with the pavement.

Squid! Jeans and v-neck, bonus points for passenger helmet. I see way worse than this regularly here in LA, will try to get some better sightings soon.

Two for one! I'm not sure if the second qualifies as squid, but he'd definitely go "squish" in a crash!
Lane splitting in some crazy 101 traffic when I came across these guys. The first one isn't very good quality as I didn't think my camera was still running, but you can see the horror of the second in all its glory. Cotton pants, t-shirt, no gloves, no boots Slacks, dress shoes, dress shirt, open face, no gloves, lane splitting like a baws. good lord how do I edit the size of these |

Okay, guys, Seriously! almost NO ONE in my state wheres ANY gear, no ****, Live free or die! lol i feel like such a dweeb riding around in my armor plate jacket or my yamaha leather race jacket, my hjc, my gloves, my boots, my long thick canvas pants, all while it being 90+degrees outside, everyone else is riding around in sunglasses, hat, tank tops, shorts sandals, no gloves haha atleast i know ill have less road rash i guess??
But seriously if i took a picture of every squid i see i'd never get anywhere i'm going but here are my first and probably only ones Ok this guy on the highway yes he is wearing a half helmet with no face shield, the saddle bags are covering his bare calves because he is wearing shorts and also sandals and just a t shirt as i passed by him later and saw. All i can say about this guy is atleast his toes are covered by.. skate shoes and he also has something covering his throttle hand... yea |

Once I move back to Az, I'll have all kinds of pics to contribute to this thread.
Helmets are mandatory here in OR, but that's often the only gear people wear. One of my favorite squid sightings (common in Az) are the typical tank top, flip flops, shorts, but bonus point for having a helmet...not on their head, though, just carrying it around on the back of the bike. |

A fine catch in a tank top, shorts, sneakers, gloves, and a full face helmet. Funny thing is it was overcast all day, and the sun never really came out.

Harsh thread
I have been a daily rider for 23+ years, 7 days a week all year round, ALL different kinds of bikes too. My wife owns a cage that occassionally i have to ride in but i dont own or drive one myself. One thing I don't have the time for is judging other riders for their riding attire. People don't have to share my views on anything, including what riding gear is appropriate. Weekend warriors snapping pics from their CARS of so called "squids" is laughable. Why the labels on folks who just arent as scared as you to ride in heavy traffic every day. I admit there are idiots on the road and they are behind the wheel as well as bikes! (Some are even taking pics while driving. Hmmmm)
Mon-Fri I can count how many bikes I see in a day. On the weekends...countless guys wearing ATGATT and pretending to be experienced bikers. Easy to spot em too. They mostly ride in groups, their gear always looks brand new, not a spec of road mung on their bike (od reads 500 miles) and they ride straight down the oil slick all day cuz they're scared of the shoulder and other cars. And all this is OK. They have a right to enjoy bikes too! In all my years I have yet to have someone call me squid to my face. I wear jeans, boots, gloves, tshirts and no helmet. My choice. I nod and drop a hand to ANYONE on a bike cuz we SHOULD have a common love...open air and freedom. Gear or no gear. For the record, I DO NOT stunt in traffic or split lanes dangerously cuz I wanna live. Those that do are just idiots. No different than the idiot in the car that pulled out in front of me at the last intersection and did a huge burnout and went sideways. I have avoided countless accidents using my skills and predicting the worst from ALL the cagers, bikers, truckers AND pedestrians. The only people I hear say "I had to lay my bike down to avoid an accident" are riders who can't ride and don't know what to do when hazzards pop up, rely to heavily on what gear can do to save you and certainly can't foresee the dangers they should. We all ride. We're all different. Its what makes the world go round. Chill with the finger pointing and concentrate on honing your own skills to avoid the dangers ALL vehicles pose to us out there. Btw...where I live, COPS ride in boots, half helmets and short sleeve uniform shirts with standard uniform pants. Squids too?? |

My response? As a new rider i'm even more prone to falling than someone with more experience, so by logic wouldn't that mean if anyone should be ATGATT it should be the newbies? Why despise those that spend money on gear if they're new? I dont look down on the new riders with all leathers and gear. I respect their decision to protect themselves, and I could not care less about those who don't. Also, those two friends have both already crashed, and told me now that they wish they had worn leathers and will be buying them. |

i have a few points to make but i want to preface them... first of all keep in mind i'm over my limit in the booze dept. anyway, i see you live in florida so keep in mind i live in southern california. my commute on bike was over 120 miles a day splitting through bumper to bumper traffic for awhile. (much smaller now though... i live close to work... now i get 5 miles of solid construction traffic for 30 minutes... what the hell!) i also can look fancy hanging my butt off at the race track pretending to be rossi and scratching up my stupid sliders i paid too much for. ($15 is too much. anyway i have not raced in a couple seasons because i just don't have the money for it right now) though i did really enjoy visiting jennings gp in florida. boy was that fun earlier this year. anyway, on to my points... point 1: i'll call you a squid to your face. because you are a squid, sir. it's okay. lots of us are squids. i too am often a squid in many ways. the first step to rehabilitation is accepting the truth. point 2: let me ask you how your skill will save you on a two lane road that's under construction so it has those barricades on the sides and a car in the opposite lane has a tire blow-out from some piece of construction debris and hits another car and they all spin into your lane hitting the cars in front of you creating a barricade with no possible way around about 35 feet in front of you all quickly skidding toward you. (it's a trick question- there's no way out, you get hit by the cars even if you were able to stop in time, which in this scenario you actually can't) point 3: under the above circumstances, what would be different simply by wearing a helmet? i will answer #3 for you. the answer is death. you are astonishingly less likely to be mortally wounded by bashing your skull open and displaying your brains on the road for all to see simply by wearing a real helmet. which surprisingly makes riding much easier and more enjoyable. i'm sure you have taken your fair share of rocks, bugs, trash, cigarette butts, bird ****, drinks thrown out of peoples cars, debris from cars crashing into each other right next to you... i know i have taken many of each of those directly to the face. boy, this one time i was on the freeway at night going through construction and this ****ing idiot doesn't even see the construction and decides not to brake. so i jumped in between the two lanes and the guy plowed into the car, ejecting the cars brake light at me. lots of debris in my face. though mostly it hit my leg. ****ing idiots, right? thinking about having a bunch of glass and plastic hit my face, even with gogs and a face sock... yeah, that sounds pleasant. you would have to be stupid. not that i'm calling you stupid. i'm simply calling your choice to go out on public roads with those ****ing idiots with no helmet stupid. and jesus you live in florida. i have seen some terrible car drivers around. but florida has some real ****. they should give an award to florida for some of those assholes. but it's cool. live and let live. you riding with no helmet honestly doesn't effect me so if you enjoy the rocks to the face, power to ya. chicks dig scars. i crash a lot so maybe i'm biased towards wearing my "fancy gear". though i personally don't ride in groups because most other riders honestly scare the **** out of me. i only really ride with a few girls who know what they're doing.

I think he accidentally walked into the wrong thread lol
You can choose to wear what you want and ride how you want, but that doesn't change the fact that you're squidding it up all of the place. Eww Keep in mind that being "fearless" and being "reckless" are two different things. The very definition of reckless is lack of care for the consequences of ones actions. By choosing not to wear gear, clearly squids don't care about the ramifications of if they needed it. You can point at a rider going ATGATT and say all you want, but assuming they are riding normally they are being safe. You can point at a rider with only a helmet on and regardless of how "skilled" they are they are most definitely taking risks. As a stunt performer who regularly hits the ground, safety is number one. I've cut and bruised myself up many times just from wrecking without being on a moving vehicle. With pads on. Many people who refuse to wear gear while riding are deluding themselves to what might happen if they did go down. Probably because they have never hit the ground very hard or that they just get into this complacent state of immortality. You'll be traveling fast enough to really **** **** up permanently. When my coworkers have riding meetups anyone without gear on is shamed on, as not only is it reckless in our occupation but shows a disregard for safety which doesn't look good when your job description is "Stunt and Safety". Long story short, I will post photos and laugh about squids because they are squids it's fun spotting them. 40 years experience or not. (BTW I was in my car because it's a little difficult to carry bottles of gatorade, beer, water, and other groceries on a bike, doesn't change th- SQUID!) Great example of what I said above, recently worked with a guy who broke his leg completely in half, and I mean completely, blood, bone everything, landing wrong off a mini trampoline. It is likely you will experiences forces FAR in excess of what he did falling off a bike, and he was a professional athlete.
