You know you ride a 250 when, after answering some hot shot you just out rode what size the bike is, you smirk as their jaw hits the ground.

After three years I still try to shift into that ghost 7th gear. I never did get in the routine of keeping mental note of how many gears I had just shifted. Doesn't help that I got one of the 250's with the bad ECU problem. on cooler days my RPM's show normal at highway speeds. On 90+ degree days like today it will show about 1500 to 2000 rpm's higher, which makes me thing I still have a gear left.

Damn, not sure if my bike has an issue or it is just from me riding a whole harder the last year due to expierence increasing. But when I first started riding I was getting 50-60 MPG. Now I am lucky to get even 40 MPG. Quicker starts at lights and averaging 70-80 MPH on interstate now is probably my answer to this conundrum. ;

I'm not sure I follow; those 2 and a half second times from 60-80 on those bikes is measured in top gear. In 2nd gear (or maybe even in first depending on gearing), those 60-80 times would be even much quicker than that (well under 2 seconds). Did you mean that we were expecting too much or too little to meet that benchmark of a few seconds from 40-80?

60-80 on an old gsxr 600 happens in an instant in first-second gear (shift point is around 72mph with my gearing afaik, I blocked my view of the mph)
you know you ride a 300 when you hop on it after riding a gsxr at the track and think it's broken because nothing happens when you pull the throttle

When you're idling at a stoplight, hit the rev limiter dump the clutch HARD, and your front wheel stays mostly on the ground.

Or, the only time your front wheel has ever left the ground was when you put it on a stand for maintenance.

A couple of seconds is two seconds, not a few seconds. That's less time than you might think. Sorry, but I'm skeptical your garden-variety mid-displacement bike is that quick. Please offer a citation at least comparable to the one I've provided. Three or four seconds I'll buy. Two? Doubt that. And the "benchmark" is the amount of power you need to get out of trouble. Surely the suggestion is not that you have to ride a powerful supersport to get out of trouble?

Yeah, I realize it's apples to oranges to a degree. But I couldn't find anything published for a 40-80 mph roll-on.
Here's why I'm still skeptical. Literbikes make huge torque and power, even at relatively low RPM. My 750 pulls like a freakin' freight train no matter what gear I'm in. According to a Sport Rider dyno chart I found at http://www.sportrider.com/sites/spor...000rr-dyno.jpg, ticking over at just 5000 rpm (sounds reasonable for engine speed at 60 mph in 6th gear to me), a BMW S1000RR is making about SIXTY ft-lb of torque. With that much torque, if it can't get a 20 mph speed increase in two seconds, seems unreasonable that it'd be able to get double that in two seconds even in a lower gear. Three seconds? Maybe. Four? Sure. But not two. Just a feeling based on my own butt dyno. I have no data to back it up, but I do ride a mid-heavyweight sportbike so I'm not speculating in a total vacuum. Edit... on my commute home tonight I noticed that my bike is running at about 4500-4700 rpm in 6th gear at 60 mph. So my guesstimate above is a little high. Underlying thoughts still apply IMHO.

...when you get pulled over for going 20mph above the speed limit(70mph). The cop realizes that it's a 250 and lets you go because his radar gun might need calibration.
...then you pat your ninjette on the tank as he walks away.

the only time my bike has ever been "kinda dropped" (it never fully went down, got caught on the work bench ) was when I was picking it up and putting it up on jack stands and I knowingly put the peg on the side I was standing on on the stand closest to me first.... I knew this was a bad idea and knew I wanted to put the other side peg on first but figured ahh whatever, what could go wrong Lets just say there was a shift in the balance
