Definitely use blue loctite on this bolt and pretty much any other bolt on the rear sets.
I recently replaced my rear sets with the SVRacing ones and Blair made it pretty evident you should be using blue loctite generously.

I replaced the pinch bolt/cotter with a socket head cap screw the first time I lost it. If you want to be doubly sure on all of your bolts if you replace them, buy a longer bolt and run a jam nut [just a hex nut] on the 'thru' side and tighten that as well. |

Gear shifter fell off on highway
Was driving home the other day, went to downshift to make a pass. Then went to upshift and couldn't feel the shifter. Guess I didn't get it to 5th. Looked down and the shifter lever was flopping around. The bolt must have backed out. So I'm thinking what to do. I can't pull over. I'd never get started again in 6th gear. I'm still many miles from home also. I knew I could plan my route home and only have 1 red light to deal with. So, I make that exit, the light is green but then changes to red. I went ahead and hit the shoulder. I pulled the shifter and put the bike in 3rd. I only had about 2 blocks to go so 3rd is ok for that little distance and getting it moving wasn't too bad.
Ordered the parts online. $9 in parts and about that in shipping. Oh well, the price to play. So, it's been driven into our heads time and time again. Give the bike a once over checking items before hitting the road. I might have caught the bolt being loose had I done that. |

Glad you made it home safe. Make sure the bolt hole threads are still clean and you didn't bang them up when you were shifting on a partially extracted bolt. You might need to throw some helicoil in there.

Already installed new bolt and washer. I looked inside and checked the threads. They were ok. Took it for a ride. Got home. Rechecked tightness.

I just learned about checking bolts today. Last night I performed an oil change and I noticed a small pool of oil under my bike leaving work today. Turned out the bolt right next to the oil filter housing had came loose somehow cause I never touched it. Fortunetly it didn't fall out and spew oil all over my rear tire on the freeway causing me to crash or have my motor explode. Oil level is still full so I got lucky.

Not trying to revive an old thread, but yeah that's exactly what I'm doing. This happened to me last night on I 95. I managed to pull over and began the search for a bolt on the bike that would fit. Turns out the allen-head bolts that hold the footpegs in place are the same thread pattern. Pulled one out of the right side peg (there are like five of them) and popped it in on the shifter and presto! I had a functioning shifter! The real parts are in the mail as we speak.

I know this thread is super old, and I have a 300 not a 250, but I need some help here.
I'm trying to get the old shifter off so I can put a new one on, but the bigger allen wrench that came with the bike kit is too small. I found a piece in my tool kit that fits that I can use with my screwdriver, but this bolt will not budge at all. I've had some issue getting bolts off of my bike for the first time, but strong neighbor has always been able to get them started for me. Not this time. Wouldn't budge for him either. Any help? I can shift with the old one on there, but it's pretty bent. I could only get it bent back out far enough to where it's not hitting the rod on a downshift.

Make sure sure you're spinning in loosening direction (right-hand rule).
Strange that it's allen-key head on yours, should be 10mm socket. You can also slip closed end of a 2nd wrench over first to increase leverage by having longer handle. |

I recommend using allen-bit on ratchet socket.
https://www.harborfreight.com/6-pc-3...set-69546.html Along with handle-extension, you’ll have enough leverage to undo the pivot bolt and not risk stripping it or injury. An 18” lever in this case makes easy work of this bolt. |

I had tried that with what was in my tool kit, but couldn't get it.
I tried heating it, couldn't get it. I ended up taking the whole thing off and trying that way. Just like before, all it was doing was stripping the bolt. Neighbor found a Torx bit and hammered it in, then used a ratchet to get it. It took several tries, but worked. The whole bolt, from top to bottom, was covered in blue loctite. Crusty chunks of it were all around inside where the bolt goes in. I've been told that's how it should be, I just know I have to order a new bolt.

I just HATE allen-headed bolts!! Just way too easy to strip. I replace them with regular hex bolts every chance I get!
I think just one drop of blue Loctite should do for most places that specify it. |

I just hate allen-key bolts with passion. Especially in higher-torque applications, using shallower rounded-head design with less engagement surface area is just asking for trouble. Especially when proper tools such as sockets and ratchet wrenches aren't used. Those little itty-bitty L-shaped keys are horrible! The sadistic engineer who designed them should be beaten!!!

I agree. I ended up buying a set that had nice big handles on them for leverage. they work great, and they actually fit in the bolts on my bike (unlike the two that came with it).
