@Dmented is that your lower about to drag in the 2nd shot?
Great pics everyone! Keep em coming. These are some of the best lean angle shots available for 250's that I have seen. I need to dig through my photos and post mine.

So raising the tail an inch actually would help reduce lean angle needed, along with adding more ground clearance.

The more noticeable change is in the rake and trail... Steeper rake and shorter trail both mean less stability which means quicker turn ins

I did replace the woodcraft rearsets with Vortex, gained about a half inch up and back a little.....after the nasty peg drag he had....kinda ruined the rest of the day and cut off about an inch off the Vtx pegs to try to help, he rides with his tip-toe on the peg but still drags his toe. On the SV650 he is dragging the belly pan, and toes too, he likes the lean....

So do you want more lean to go faster, or you just like the idea?
A related question: in some of these photos riders are really hanging off the bike, in others they are almost aligned to the centerline of the bike--can you make a general assumption that the people who are hanging off more are moving faster? (because won't being upright with your bike almost dragging parts just throw you off going faster?) Or is it just riding style? |

Being directly linked to the centripetal acceleration, the angle of lean (of bike + rider combined CG respect to the contact patches) is proportional to the speed of the bike (square) and to the radius of the turn. The centripetal acceleration is: a = v^2 / r where v is the constant speed and r the radius of the path. As Alex explained, each picture can show any combination of speed and radius. The hanging off style does not change that total angle of lean, but keeps the bike more vertically, helping the suspension work better and avoiding metal contact with pavement for extreme angles (extreme centripetal accelerations).

Sometimes, when the track has the traction, tires have the grip and the bike has the lean, the rider can be awarded a lot of freedoms of body position and style. On any given day, style can vary wildly between any 2 riders, one of the fastest guys I know rides as we call it "all crossed up" but somehow makes it work. Under "my" ideal conditions, have learned I can lean a bike so far over, the what we read as "textbook" body position has to be somewhat altered. When your butt is off the seat, chin down next to hand on the grip, both knees are against the tank (hips not open to the corner), my elbow became the limit to my lean angle but it was the only way I could get the pace I wanted through the corners. The first time it happened, I instantly pulled my elbow in closer, getting it off the tarmac. I am sure if anyone caught it on camera or video, my body position would have looked a bit more like a spider on the side of the bike rather than a rider on the front of a magazine. And check Nemesis's pic, his outside knee is definitely not locked under the tank lip but it works for him. @alex.s Winner???!!!! hahahahahah @Nemesis - Awesome pic yo, did you have to cut the fairing to get your clipons under the top triple?

Just out of curiosity, would having wider rims like the vrossi ones from Indonesia with 120/70 front and 150/60 rear tyres help any for leaning more?

Although larger tires could help in the lean angle, having raced 125gp bikes, I would say it's not as much a factor as speed as applied through an arc.
Here are pictures of 125gp riders who have lean angles while on 120 tyres. Tyre sizes currently being used by Ninjette riders in the form of slicks. |
