Lookin' good! Smokin' deal, and original paint and pipes, too.

Now get that puppy fired up.
Use H-D dino 20w50, not that synthetic stuff in an Evo.

Why would that be?

Synthetic oil isn't any different than conventional - it just has a closed molecular structure that makes it less likely to breakdown from heat and doesn't use viscosity improvers to get its multigrade range.

In an air-cooled Big Twin that's a big advantage. One of the reasons that everyone has run 20W-50 in HDs is because when it (conventional oil) breaks down from heat it will only drop to a 20-weight. If you were running a 10W - anything it will drop to a 10-weight - which wouldn't give you adequate oil pressure.

A synthetic won't breakdown and drop to the low end of it's rating like a conventional oil because it doesn't use viscosity improvers to get it's multigrade range. Synthetic oil base starts at the high end of it's range unlike a conventional oil that starts at the low end and uses viscosity improvers to get to the high range.

If I were you I would hear it run before buying too many more parts.

Haven't bought any parts for it yet, the extra wheel came with the bike

Only thing we bought was a couple cans of spray paint and chrome cleaner/polisher and some shop towels.

I've always used Delvac Synthetic Diesel oil in all my Harleys and I've never had a problem.

Use what works for you, but synthetic goes through my '81 Shovel and my friend's '84 Evo like chit through a goose. Both with healthy engines. :shrugs:

There are no bad choices with today's oils.

Video of her running:

Link to original page on YouTube.

We've had the bike for exactly one week and she's already running!

Yes if you watch the video that is gasoline pissing out of the bike, I didn't notice it at the time I was too busy looking at the smoke from some of the oil that got on the pipes lol. No worries, the gas was coming from the carb overflow tube... It was stuck open. Fixed it now. Carbs need to be cleaned though. More of that tomorrow...

Anyway.... It's A-L-I-V-E

there's a strong chance he won't let me until the spring since he doesn't have it registered yet.

Congrats - good job!

Looks like you will end-up doing pretty well on it. It looks pretty nice with the tins on, and is not running too bad considering. A little carb work and you should be good.

There's always a chance that a non-running cycle will have issues, but it doesn't look like that's the case - so you are in good shape.

I bought a non-running project bike for cheap a while ago, and it fired up after some minor work. Another guy I know bought almost the exact same thing, for a little more, and it turned out the rod brearings and piston skirt were toast - so it was junk. You never know...

If the bike appears to be in decent shape and isn't seized and the price is right, i'd take that gamble.

Pulled the carbs, they were pretty rat f'd so we cleaned em and put them back, took a break for now but we're going to slap the tank back on, and see how she goes from there. Maybe she'll be able to ride today.

I'd rock that for commutes and cruises. Not exactly a corner carver, but I could still rock it.

Excellent! Ride it for a while, if you don't like it, sell it and triple your money.

You did - and won.

The bike that had the blown rod bearings and a piston with chunks missing turned over (slowly) but wouldn't start. Mine did the same thing (turned over very slowly) but all it needed was a starter relay.

Luck of the draw. You never know.

Sweet looking bike. I too am one of the few non-Harley riders who can appreciate Harleys, and all cruisers. Though I still give me parents crap for riding them haha, just like they give me crap for riding "crotch rockets."

Lol same, It's funny. My tiny 300 can keep up with my dad's giant VTX 1800 (sort of) and It could blow the tires of his Harley. So I give him sh*t about it all the time that I have less than 20% of the CC's and can keep up. lol

No, but who in their right mind would use a bike to pull a tree stump out of the ground when you can just use a stump grinder lol

Oh god no. Wrapped exhausts look ghetto.

He bought some aftermarket pipes vance and hines or whatever it's called (it's stupid loud). And he got a spoked back tire. Next is some buck horn handle bars. I'll post a pic when I get a chance.
