I did a very bad thing today.
Yes, yes I did. Very bad. Something people shouldn't do. I test rode a Trek X-caliber 8 and a Superfly 6. OMG....those things are amazing. The Superfly, that is just balanced. I was in the bike store and went right into a track stand. The bike felt so tight. My old Specialized Hardrock Sport is nothing compared to these bikes. The remote lockout is a crazy great thing to have. I shouldn't have done that. Now I am trying to throw ideas around in my head on how to get one. The HRS should net $400 once my friend pays me (still sitting in my garage). I'm sure the roadie could snag me $500. Hmmmm.....

Lol that got me in trouble too. Why do you think I finally bought new wheels and hydraulic brakes and a fork with remote lockout and am debating getting a new shock too? Bikes are a money pit when you start comparing to new stuff.
Also. I played with the mill today. The last few days, the new shop guy and I have been playing with the CNC functions and we finally got it right. One half of my headset press tool is done now. knocked out the old races and the head is waiting for me to finish the other end of my press tool this week. My bike build is almost done. Almost able to give y'all some pictures. I CANT WAIT TO RIDE!! |

Yeah it is a FS rig, but man, on longer rides this thing is a dream!
I am not picky on weight, because I know my level of fitness is not quite where it needs to be. So I view the extra weight as a good thing. Maybe one day soon I can snag a Superfly with an AL frame. One can only hope! lol

I just entered this http://www.12hoursofmesaverde.com which is in Colarado and I'm thinking of going to Utah next month for a 100 miler. The 100miler is the opening round of the National Ultra Endurance championship. The NUE series has a round in Ohio so maybe I'll drop in and hang out with Chris while I'm in the state.
With all these out if state races I want to do I'm thinking of selling the 250 and buying a plane |

your right the Niner does say Pedal Damn It but roar of my I9 rear hubs 120 point of engagement translates to Get the F**k out of my way or I'll run your a$$ over.
I had I guy turn back as we exited the single track to the fire road and ask WTF is the noise. Its funny because I don't even notice it. |

When you ride local trails, at least you don't have to yell "rider" or "rider back".

I want a bad ass Enduro bike for 2015 and start doing these Enduro races. Maybe if I do well enough with the single speed this year I can get a bike manufacturer to sponsor me with a new bike for said races |

Chone's still running on a two stroke motor so he's got no torque, it all about high RPMs. Where as I have the super duty power stroke diesel that lives in the low rpm torque range, once I hit redline I start choking and hacking.

lol, you should see me when I get going. 120+ rpm all day long! Even a relaxed day never sees me slow below 95 rpm unless I'm out of the saddle. My power band is geting broader. gradually.

Nah, got it back in '11. Took anything and everything else out since I didn't ever want a single bad thing happening to this bike. Now I've realized, it doesn't make sense not to enjoy it. So I am taking it out for training rides, trail rides, and anything in between.

I sit in between. Some days I'll run 70-85 rpm, others I'll run 105+. It really depends on what I'm working on.
When I start "racing" against my friends, I use whatever feels best for me that day.

I don't know what your region is like, since the closest I have been is IL and MI. I assume that it is similar terrain...flat.
If so, keep some high rpm to warm up, then turn a higher gear where the rpm's dip. Hold that for a while. Pretty much just simulate larger hills. Then go back and cool down, bring your HR back down, and repeat. I do that all the time to simulate hills. There is also a small tiny hill (sharp incline though) on a bike path about 10-miles from me. It is out of the saddle sharp incline. I ride out there (warm up) then climb and coast down the other side, immediately repeat, and then wait for a sec, let my HR recover (around 160-ish) and repeat. Sometimes I'll repeat it several times in a row to blast me pretty good. It all depends on how I'm feeling. Just keep your RPM around 75-80 on those "climbs". Now if I want to simulate a longer climb, I just hold it longer on the flats, and take it slower. That will simulate those long, steady climbs I can get into on really long rides out in the country (still nothing like those in Colorado).

Well, near school, it's ungodly flat. I recorded a ride on strava before it got cold to see just how flat. Try 210 feet of climbing total over the span of 30 miles flat.
But at home it's hilly. I live right on the edge of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. It's pretty hilly if you want it to be I know that hill simulating trick. I use it on the trainer too |

If I want hills all around, I have to drive a ways to get there. It is mainly flat near me. Nothing that is long and steady climbs, just short and quick sprints.

MTB is almost done, just needs tires. I went for quality within a budget. aka, bang for the buck.
Still deciding on tires, right now I'm thinking Continental Trail king 2.2 RaceSport front and Mountain King II 2.2 RaceSport rear. Thanks for putting up with my bazillion questions, @rojoracing53 @Sirref: bro, do you even MTB?!?! |

On a ****** old (bought in 2002) stock diamondback that my older brother handed down to me yea. I was using it to commute to school when I was living a few miles off campus. UMBC's road is called "hilltop circle" for a reason hahaha so it was a good workout. At the moment though it's in my garage waiting for me to pick up a new rear sprocket since my former roommate crashed the bike and bent it somehow along with snapping the chain. The chain I already have a replacement for. He also "lost" the bike lock & key at the same time...
I don't have much money set aside to do a true MTB build like yours so it's working for now. |

You're telling me! I want to ride badly also.
Jason, I'll do the mohican 100k if you do the mohican 100miler. Should take us about the same amount of time, right? If I'm in Ohio, ill get you from the airport because you'd be right in my area. If I'm in ca, you can pick me up and I'll fly with you back to Ohio. Ppssshhhh why would I replace my frame? It's been so good to me. |

Best trail in MD that I've ridden is patapsco, which is conveniently close to umbc. I've spent most of my time MTB there since I lived close enough to ride my bike there and back for a year. It's a fantastically fun trail in the spring.

I went out for just under 40-miles yesterday (a mix of road and trails). For some reason the bike felt like it was dragging. It was like I was fighting more than the wind and terrain. So I got off the bike (this was halfway through the ride) and spun the wheels. Both brakes were dragging. No wonder I had to work so hard yesterday.
So no more riding my MTB until I bleed the brakes. I think I'll just take it in to get serviced. Not so cheap, but super easy. I'm still gathering a tool collection, so I am passing on a lot of the maintenance for now. I have a few more pieces to get first before I start working on my HiFi. I have everything for the roadie, just need the rest for the MTB.

I've had that happen with the rear brake before, turned out that I had unwittingly worn the brake pads down to nothing and they were sticking as a result. Was a pretty easy fix, just put new pads on it. I've never had to bleed the brakes on my mtb, which is fairly surprising considering that I've had it for 4 years.
