I decided what I wanted, and called a couple of dealers to get it. ABS, KRT paint, new, and she's mine! I think her name might be Ivy.

Manual says to keep the RPM under 4000 for the first however many miles.
They don't tell you it's hard to do. This bike wants to go. Holy carp. Let the clutch out in first? 3000rpm. I'm only at 45mph when I hit sixth gear. Will be glad when the break-in period is over. OOoh, she sounds pretty, though. Her name has settled down and she is Poison Ivy. I tried to reconcile Tinkerbell, but no. Same with Sprite. Too cutesy for this bike. |

When I got my 2020 Yamaha MT-07 it had some restrictions on RPM like that. I took it to redline a couple times on the way home from the dealer, and opened the throttle at various RPMs several times in the 50 mile ride. The idea was to get the rings seated before the cylinders smoothed up too much. Now its oil level doesn't change visibly in 5,000 miles, so I'm thinking this break-in method has merits.

Nice. I haven't taken it to redline but I've run it up a bit a few times.

You don't have to rev it up, but within 1st 100-miles, you should give it the beans to maximize cylinder-pressure to push rings onto cylinder-walls...
This isn't some '50s-tech cast-iron engine with tolerances in 1/1000th-inch that requires grinding lots of cylinders away to make parts fit. That's mostly done already through precision machining within 1/10000th-millimetre along with plateau-honing. Break-in is just final stage of seating rings onto surface. They most likely didn't put in old-style single-weight dino oil that burns easily, so you don't have to worry about too much glazing cylinders. Don't let it idle too long, maybe adjust idle to 1500rpms. And vary RPMs and load/throttle (don't ride at steady speed). Gradually add load/throttle, 50%, 75%, 100% by 100-miles. https://www.motorcyclistonline.com/b...break-in-myth/ Might be good idea to send in 1st-oil change sample for used-oil analysis to Blackstone Labs to get baseline reading for engine. Get TBN option. Last futzed with by DannoXYZ; August 7th, 2023 at 09:41 AM. |
