What Size Trailer for a Ninjette?

So I'm sitting here on a cold rainy day and just got to thinking.

My son has joined the US Army, he's in basic right now, but eventually will complete his training and be stationed some place. I know he wants to bring his bike with him. Which got me thinking about how he was going to store the bike once he got there. As a private living in the barracks I'm sure he won't have a garage. So I got to thinking about getting an enclosed trailer to store the bike in.

I figured we had a lot of riders here that haul their ninjettes to track day.

What size enclosed trailer are you using?

From looking at the specs the Ninjette is about 6'6" long so a 4x6 trailer is out.

6x8 wedge nose. I can get two bikes in there comfortably, plus tools, gear and accessories. Plus, it's the same width as my truck so I don't have to worry about anything sticking out farther than the tow rig and my mirrors still work great.

^ this would be enough. I wouldn't go any smaller personally as it can get a little tight moving around the bike in the trailer.

You could get away with just a rear door as well, no real need for a side door.

6x12 v-nose here, during the track season it doubles as my mobile motel room for 2 bikes and 2 riders + all gear. My buddy tows a 4x8 enclosed for his single bike/gear and also sleeps in it (unloaded) while at the track. It's kinda tight but is more than enough room.

Just have him park the bike next to his bed in the ant farm. I'm sure his superiors and bunkmate would love it.

get a van.
An Astro EXT or full size. It'll do everything and store the bike.

That's a thought. Might be easier on parking rules, ie they might not allow trailers in the barracks parking lot, only off site in some storage lot.

Except for the gas mileage on a day to day basis. A self motivating enclosed trailer is the way to go.
The long Astro will hold a sport bike inside comfortably. If he moves up to a 90's full size ($1000-$2500) He can go with a standard length for 1 bike and still camp inside. We're using a 1 ton extended length for 2 bikes and camping space.

Not finding many used enclosed trailers on CL. New ones are $2,500 and up, for twice that price there are lots of vans that look pretty decent without too high of mileage.

I'm liking this van idea.

How bad does the gas smell get? I suppose a roof vent would be a good idea. Maybe a solar powered vent fan.

I don't notice a gas smell from the bikes. I do get it from the extra fuel cans I bring with.

If he did someting like this

Then tint or wrap the windows he can have room for the bike on one side and a bed or hammock on the other plus fridge/camp stove, storage bins.

image search motovan

Astro

1 bike in a 1/2 ton

2 bikes and gear in a long 1 ton

As cool as I think the van idea is, it is also more expensive and a lot more upkeep.

Taking care of a simple single axle enclosed trailer is pretty minimal, taking on another vehicle on the other hand, not so much. JMO

You don't have to worry about the vans gas mileage, because the ninja gets 55+ mpg.

The downside to the trailer is where it will have to be stored. Can't be left in the barracks parking lot, will have to be stored in a storage lot on base. Not as convenient to get to your bike. Since he doesn't have a car right now, the van would be his primary vehicle and bike storage.

I'm just kicking ideas around right now. It won't be needed for about 4 months.
