Helmets - mirrored visor

Does anyone ride with a mirrored visor? I'm going to check out a helmet after work. It comes with a mirrored visor so I'm not sure that will work for me - will see. It's a full face helmet - I'm looking to get a full face to replace my 3/4.

Thanks,

Just don't ride at night with it. I have two visors(dark and clear). I keep the clear visor on the bike just in case.

what type of helmet. My Shoie has the quick detach visor... I have a smoked one for the day time and a clear for night... I can actually change it with the helmet on my head by the side of the road.

I love the smoked, my commute to work is into the sun.... both ways, sucks-tastically

need to wash off the gnats, they weight is starting to cause my gas mileage to drop.

Another option if you are just going for the sun protection side is to look at a helmet that has an internal visor. That way you can ride day, overcast, inside parking garages, night, without changing the outer visor but by raising or lowering the internal one.

And I would be surprised if a helmet didn't come with a clear option, just look for the make and model online and I am sure you'll find the clear.

I wanted a Shark helmet that had an internal visor but I couldn't find any where local that I could try them on. I'm sure my next helmet will have an integrated visor.

One thing about mirrored visors is that the finish scratches very easily. That's why I switched to dark smoke.

I have a mirrored visor and ride at night with it. It darkens enough during the day to make my eyes comfortable and doesn't make things very dark at night. My color was "iridium". Also have shades that drop down if the sun is really in my face. Give some of the lighter shades a try, you'd be surprised how much you can see at night

Mirrored visors just look tinted from the inside. I have one on my variant and ride at night with it, it's a little darker but doable once your eyes adjust

I didn't like the mirror visor at all. Well for one the helmet was a L which is too small it squeezed my head uncomfortably and the mirror was scratched all up I didn't like how it was hard to see out of

Sorry, did you already buy it or pass? Clear visors are relatively cheap and you can replaced the padding for a larger size in most helmets. I had to get thinner pads for mine when i got it to accommodate my chipmunk cheeks.

Oh no I didn't buy it. He would have given it to me for a real bargain but it was too small anyway. There's another one that's nearby that is full face near new and clear visor. The guy is going to call me today on it so I can come n take a look.

This is just my own opinion, so take it as such.

I would never consider buying a used helmet (which is sounds like you are looking at) regardless of the deal, unless I personally knew the owner and had an immense amount of faith in them.

The thing about helmets is they are designed that any impacts break down the protective padding inside to spread the force out. So while the shell might look perfectly fine, the question becomes how often was it dropped from the bike, or a table, or chair, or whatever and onto what surface; concrete, asphalt, grass. Also, how old really is the helmet? The padding breaks down on its own after a few years even if its never been moved from a shelf. There's a tag inside that should have that information.

I know some helmets are ridiculously expensive, but there are a lot that are good budget lids that have good protection and features. My favorite right now is SparX, which run around $160 and some stores carry in stock. Though RevZilla is having them on closeout for just over $80.... whoa.

Anyway, just my two cents.

was thinking about making a similar post yesterday.

I am on the fence about tinted and mirrored visors. I really like the visibility of a clear visor never liked wearing sunglasses or anything with a tint but tinted or mirrored visors just look so much cooler, and I mean what is the point of riding if you don't look cool....right?

The eternal question, looks vs function?

I really just need to try one out and see what I think

I need the tint or sunglasses. i squint to much without them. But, like i said, my eyes tend to be more sensitive.

I think it has a lot to do with what you're used to. Though i will say my boyfriend never wears sunglasses, doesn't have the same issue as me, and tried a tinted visor. He loves it.

Wait a sec... you're buying a USED helmet?

If so, it's not the greatest idea.

For one thing, it's been in intimate contact with someone else's oily, nasty scalp. It's been sweated in. It's been sneezed in. Yuk. A helmet is about as intimate a piece of apparel as underwear... would you buy someone else's used panties?

For another, you don't know what it's been through.

And finally, helmets have a limited lifespan even if they are properly cared for. The big issue is the EPS foam inside, which gets hard and brittle with age (having unearthed a 20-odd hear old helmet from my attic, I can attest that this is true). A helmet that looks perfectly good may no longer protect you properly.

The guideline is seven years from date of manufacture, or five years from date of first use, whichever comes first. After that, it's time for a new lid. You can probably stretch that for a year or two, but... well, how much is your head worth?

The manufacture date is on a label stuck to the EPS, under the liner. Take a look in your current helmet to see what it looks like. Lift or remove the liner and you'll see it.

Closeout helmets are a good way to go. You're trading a little bit of lifespan (because closeouts tend to be older) for lower cost.

PS: Re the original question: A lot of mirrored shields have a brown tint. If you prefer neutral (gray), get a smoked shield. I'm really interested in the Transitions too, but they're only available for Bell and (soon) Shoei. Personally, my main helmet has a flip-down sun visor and it's AWESOME.

I completely agree with NW on this. You have no real indication of what a helmet has been through when you buy it from some one off of CL. At the very least, pull the pads and check the manufacturing sticker. A helmet can look fantastic and be a bargain at $75; however, if it was manufactured 5 years ago, you've just spent $75 for a large paperweight.

I suggest shopping the closeouts on the gear sites, you can find some very affordable options that way.

Oh nae nae!

While not openly advertised, one of the most awesome features was the electrochromic shield. With the push of a button on the rider's left side, the shield would instantly go from clear to a convenient tint. This is awesome for the most obvious reason of not having to carry two shields to deal with variable lighting conditions. The second benefit, to this fighter pilot like tinting, is the increased visibility of the HUD.

Hell yeah. I have a white helmet, mostly white gear, and a silver visor. I've been thinking of getting a gold one to look like a legit spaceman

I've had my mirrored visor for a year and a half now. It's got a few very small scratches near the quick release system, and some microscopic ones near the lift tab. They are super hard to notice unless you're really looking for it. Just don't toss the visor around willy-nilly and it'll be fine. I keep mine in the bag my helmet came in, if I need to carry it around or whatever.

I don't like the fact that you have to push a button on the Skully to get it tinted, the more hands free the better. Maybe I'm missing something, but it should be automatic. That's why I love my photochromic shield, it's automatic, no buttons needed.

I saw someone post on fb about the Skully. Apparently it's up for pre-order here. I don't know much about it, but it sure looks incredibly awesome. Searched for it on the forum and found this thread.

I love my mirrored visor for the look and function. Be prepared to order a clear one as well or never die after the sun goes down (or before it comes up).
