I got my Yama bond 4 yesterday. OEM bearings and seals arrive on saturday. New OEM friction plates are ready as well as the Barnett clutch plates.

I got the plastic subframe tray installed. I need to pick up a rear seat latch assembly. I also pulled the swing arm off and removed the bearings. I just dropped off the swing arm to get powder coated this morning.

I've had the itch to buy a project bike or car for a while now but unfortunately not having a garage to work in sucks.

It's actually not that bad if you take your time. I have my 250 that I ride still, so it doesn't bother me to have it in pieces. If it was my only form of transport, I would likely have paid someone to fix the transmission problem. I think tonight, I'll be tearing into the crank case and hopefully get the transmission swapped. I just placed another order for OEM parts, but nothing that's super important.

Tell me about it. I lived 9 years in an apt and whenever I had a car project (previously owned a 3000gt and then a twin turbo stealth), I had to plan it so I would be done in a day. At the very least, I would need to be able to close the hood. And of course, not having a work bench and air tools really sucked. The first thing I did when I moved into my house was to epoxy the garage floor and build a work bench.

I only had my engine apart this summer, and that was a ton of work. What you're doing is just... damn. That bike is gonna love you once you're done with it.

Made some real progress tonight. I got the cases separated and pulled out the gear set with the broken 2nd gear. I still need to remove the torx bolts to remove the other set of gears. I might as well replace those while I can. It looks like the shift shaft cover and drum have to be pulled out so I can remove it. I'll probably end up replacing the forks while I'm in there. The forks don't seem to have much wear on them though.

That was transparent blue over galaxy silver. Candy blue is slightly darker.

No pics tonight, but I got a lot of work done. I got the shift drum, forks, and the inner gear set removed. I was about to just swap on the 06 gears when I noticed they beat the crap out of the bearing housing trying to remove it. It says in the manual to just thread in some bolts and it will push the housing off. Too bad they didn't read this tidbit. It would have saved them from mauling the housing. As it is, I swapped over the good gears onto the old shaft and housing. I struggled with the C clip until I gave up and did a google search for C clip pliers. It turns out I had a set in my tool box that I bought a long time ago for a turbo rebuild. Yay for tool hoarding! The pliers made things so much easier. Too bad I didn't look for it from the beginning. Haha. I need to pick up some locktite for the bolts. I have some, but I don't think it's the correct type.

Man, I really hate having to scrape off old gasket material. Tedious work while trying to avoid getting any inside the engine blows.

Ugh. Tired tonight. Picked up loctite from autozone and got the gears all snuggled up. Crank case is back on and torqued to spec. Applying the sealant sucked. Only thing worse than applying it is taking it off. I got the oil pump back on along with the clutch basket. Had to install both at the same time since there's a chain that runs off the clutch basket and drives the oil pump. That's it for tonight. Tomorrow, I should have the oil pan cleaned out and bolted up. Motor should be ready to go back in on Saturday. I got a call from the shop and the swing arm is finished and ready to be picked up. I'll have to wake up early to get it.

i would inspect everything very carefully. it appears the tooth was damaged by stray debris. perhaps the damage is a side-effect of yet unknown damage? i would inspect all of the bearings and the crank and pistons very carefully while its open.

edit: oh. i see the engine is already back together.

I looked closely at the gears and they were all pretty beat up. The R6's (especially 98-02) are known to have really bad 2nd gears. The dogs on the 3-4 gear are pretty beat up. I'll have to take a pic later if I remember. I didn't find anything except the tooth in the oil pan. I'm hoping that's all the damage. The owner heard it crunch during his track session, but didn't really care. He even had it dyno tuned with the gear broken. IMO, if it can survive a dyno tune in that condition, I don't think it was from debris. At least I hope not .

Good and bad day today.

Good- I got the new bearings installed on the swing arm and it's reinstalled.

Bad- I was installing the clutch basket and noticed it was pretty worn. I'm not really sure if I should reuse it or not. I did some searching, and it looks like it's normal, so I'm thinking I'll just reuse it. Another bad- I tried to reinstall the oil pump cover only to find out that most of the threads were previously helicoiled. Trying to thread them again broke the helicoil. Spent hours trying to rethread and gave up. Went out to autozone and picked up their thread repair kit. It works great! Directions kind of suck, but the threads are holding up under torque. I need to pick up another pack of the inserts though. Kit only came with 3 and I need 1 more. I also need to figure out how to mount that shock reservoir. It was previously zip tied to the sub frame. With the subframe tray installed, that's not possible anymore. I have an idea for it, but it will need to wait until other parts are installed.

I also found out that the HF bead breaker doesn't work all that great on the R6 rim. It works great on the 250 though.

Got my engine installed today. Took about 15 minutes with my little brother's help. My floor jack and custom adapter is freaking awesome. It made it super easy to line up and install. Also had to repair the vortex oil pump cover. It's been downed, so I sanded off what I could to make it look good and resprayed it with plastidip.

Heh. That's my little brother's car. He got it when they first came out. Not the fastest car, but it does handle really well. Interestingly, that car was built for a scion exec who ended up not wanting it. Nothing special about the car except the exec ordered it with leather seats. I'm supposed to build a sub box for it when the R6 is completed.

Hows the mileage? how is it as a DD? I want one after college because they look fun, but at the same time, I want a car that I can live with every day. They look great and a car that handles well is always a big plus in my book.

Mileage is excellent. He gets about 27 highway, sometimes seeing 30. The only thing is, it's really small. Not much cargo space if you were to take a long road trip. Weekend trips with little cargo would be ok. Sound system is odd. There's almost no music coming from behind because the rear fill speakers really suck. I hate having to get in and out of the bucket seats too. That's just me being old tho

It all depends on priorities . I would really prefer to have a truck so I can haul larger parts around. Being a home owner who works on his own projects and not having a truck sucks. I can't tell you how many things I've had to shoe horn into my camry.

Really annoyed right now. I went to install the clutch plates and it turns out that the ebay seller misled me. They posted that the clutch plates were for 99-2005. It turns out that they in fact, do not fit the 2005.

I just placed an order from the dealer. No telling how long it will take, but I hope it arrives next week. This completely set me back at least a week. I should have checked the plates when I first got them.

@choneofakind to the FR-S/BRZ. I'll be getting one one day...one day, if these bastages in this country will give me a job. Join FT-86 club plenty of stuff going on over there so you can read up on it. Crap load of turbo kits are coming out too if more power is desired. Just 4-6psi of boost and they are putting over 260hp at the wheels which sounds awesome.

Well, I'd be looking for a fun car that is fun on weekends, but still easy on gas during the week, so I'd like most likely to upgrade the rubber and suspension, and leave the intake/engine/exhaust stock.
