Yuppers! If I was almost legally blind, I'd either get surgery or rely on family to help me out. I know when you get old, you lose reaction timing and have a hard time seeing things. I know I will not be the old guy driving a full sized Caddy. I'll be in a dinky little econobox rice-mobile!

I am scheduled for eye surgery on June 23Rd. My vision will be restored to 20-20. In the meantime my Ninjette will stay in the garage on its stands, and the cage will be driven by my wife. I will continue to train on my bicycle on designated bike trails. I can ride 20 miles a day full tilt at 5:30 AM.

Haha sorry about that, I forget sometimes that there are dudes with chicks' names :P
I rode with my great-grandmother 1 time before she stopped driving, and after that I insisted on driving if I had to go anywhere with her. She was driving with her passenger side tires on the grass!! Talk about freakin' scary! |

I frequently drive by the state university here in RI. Always on the lookout for crazy college drivers but a recent newspaper article showed our former governor, now teaching at the school, to have almost run over a handicapped pedestrian, then yelled at her, hit parked cars and yelled at their owners, and driving on the wrong side of the road and on the sidewalks, passing busses with red lights flashing, and failing to stop for police. After the publicity he made a difficult but correct decision and turned in his license. Not only didn't he know what was going on around him traffic wise, he blamed others.

Good job, Alex. This is one of those thankless jobs that needs to be done by someone who can see the big picture, and clearly you're one of those folks. Good on you for also volunteering yourself and your wife to make sure he continues to get anywhere he needs to go, which is certainly something that nobody, no matter how old, ever wants to give up.

You left out highly corrupt (I guess that one goes for most states). I still miss the riding up there (dirt and road).

Thank you for carrying out a bold decision that most people would simply answer with denial. Thank you.

At the class, they had pamphlets concerning talking to people who should consider not driving due to their age/inability to drive safely. seems like this is a sensitive issue with very old drivers who do not want to give up their independence.
I grabbed a copy and sent it over to some friends who are having a hard time getting their parents to stop driving for safety's sake. They seemed very thankful for the advice the pamphlet provided. Props to you, Alex, for taking a potential fatal accident off the road. |

What happened to older people having wisdom and all that stuff they keep telling me? If they were wiser wouldn't they understand it's not safe to operate a vehicle? Well, I guess they are also always right... lol
I can understand how difficult it is to have to give up your license for a short time. I had to when I had mono. Couldn't drive, jet ski, or go out on the boat when all of my friends were out there having a grand time. It was a serious matter though and I didn't. I kind of enjoy having people drive me around. |
