Weather..how do u guys handle it?

so..i live in SoCal, where one day it will be 65 degrees..then the next day we'll be in the 80s..and lately..its starting to heat up..and something tells me its not going to get any colder..

since the temperature is gonna start increasing pretty soon

how do u guys deal with the heat..I know gear comes first..but how do u guys do it when its scorching hot..?

(dont have a bike yet, so the only gear ive ever worn was a helmet(and i thought that was hot on a warm day), so excuse the ignorance)

well i thought i can enjoy a beautiful day, until some idiot crashed into me.

now road rash pwns me bad, and i mean bad.

i only had a tshirt and jeans, and gloves, and a helmet of course.

after this accident, i doubt i will ride with no jacket on.

I'm in the same area you are..if I am going out for a canyon run, I will wear underarmour type of clothing underneath my leathers. I leave early, sometimes around 6-7am and get home before it really gets hot. I still sweat, but between the perforations in the leathers, and the underarmour, I stay relatively comfortable. I also bring a camelbak or a couple bottles of water in my tank bag. My commute is different, though. I have a 4 mile ride to work, all surface streets and nothing over 45mph. I wear a jacket, gloves, jeans, boots, gloves and helmet for that.

My suggestions: stay hydrated, ride early, and wear all the gear that you have available to you. I would rather sweat a lot than bleed a little.

With a beer and a remote. Ride early in the morning and relax in the afternoon. The bugs are out a dusk so don't go back out until it's dark. If you start early in the morning and don't get home before the heat gets real hot, just keep riding and don't stop.

80 degrees is hot? lol. Invest in warmer climate clothing. As long as I'm not stuck idling along in traffic, my vented jacket (Teknic Chicane), pants (Teknic Supervent), boots (A* SMX5), and helmet (Shoei TZ-R) all keep me super comfortable even in this extreme southern california heat.

Edit: sorry, I just saw that you haven't ridden yet. I thought the same thing before I started riding, but you wouldn't believe how cool you stay from the air blowing by you even at speeds as low as 35-40 miles per hour.

lol, well 80 degrees isn't bad, SoCal, doesnt get super super bad weather, but u know it has its random (lets climb up to mid 90s) days haha, but yea, only riding ive done was in my msf course, and all i had was the helmet..sweater etc..and i thought that was getting hot, so im thinking, "How these these guys do it"

I realy thought that it would be unbearably hot with a leather jacket on in 90 deg. weather but BlueTyke convinced me that it was not that bad. I tried it on a rally in Houston and found that as long as you keep hydrated it's not that bad. The jacket has vents in it so when you are riding the air coming thru evapoates your sweat and keeps you relatively cool. I would rather be a little bit hot than be in pain later from road rash.

Although some will say that mesh is not the safest it is the coolest. All of mine is modular so I can add wind/water layers on the inside when the weather changes. It was 94 coming home from work yesterday and as long as I was moving it wasn't that bad. On long rides - hydration, hydration no mater what the gear.

If it's too hot to ride with decent gear, it's too hot to ride.

Get some good meshed gear. Find roads that have fewer stops; as long as you keep moving the airflow will cool you.

I use a Joe Rocket Phoenix jacket (mesh) for my main jacket in the summer. Yeah, once I go down it is useless, but it is very comfortable and will hold me over until I purchase a perforated leather jacket.

We've had some high 90s here lately. I go out in T-shirt, jeans, helmet and boots. It's not as safe, sets a bad example etc etc etc, but it's what works for me.

I rode up the beach this morning (about a 2 hour ride). It's going to be near 100 today. Soccer at 2:00 (Brasil vs Italy), 2:30 (USA vs Egypt), Formula 1 at 3. I can't forget WSB at 3:30

This heat doesn't both me at all.

Drink a lot, wear all my gear with vents opened (Joe Rocket all season type stuff), and drink when i get to my destination (I usually don't ride all that long). If it is an in town ride, I take my car, ha.

I hate riding without my jacket now. I'm so much cooler (and I think I look cool too lol) in the jacket than without it. Plus it keeps me from getting a sunburn.

That is the jacket I have and let me tell you from recent experience, take out the liner and it is USELESS when it is cold. Lots of air blows through, but when I got to warmer roads it was really comfortable.

I took MSF in 100degree socal weather. Long sleeve t-shirt and jeans. It was hot to say the least. But like ASecretNinja said, once you start actually riding and moving it will cool you down.

I wear full leathers with some nice vents and perforations and it is actually not that hot. Under Armour also helps, the wal-mart knockoffs work well too.

Socal weather might vary from day to day, but at least we don't get snowed in in most areas.

Wow I wish it was 80 here it has been in the high 90's all week here. This is my jacket it has mesh on the front and back and it is hotter than hell even going down the hiway. I was wearing a backback to work put that was just way way to hot so I started strapping it to my back seat, it helps a little bit, but it is still boiling hot riding.

It's not as hot as you think to wear leather on a warm day.

I have this EXACT same jacket except mine is yellow.

To the OP. I WISH it was only 80º here. I'm riding in 110º heat index with full gear on. I think of it this way. Sure, I may be HOT AS HELL when sitting at a light, but man, when I'm in the hospital with a broken leg and minor scrapes and bruises because an asshole cut me off, I'll be thanking god I had all my **** on.

All the gear, all the time. I will NOT let some jackass PWN me in more than one way.

Drink plenty of water and apply sunscreen on the neck. At lights crack the visor in the helmet and when possible, ride on roads with shade.

I know it's god awful hot out, but that little bit of sweat and discomfort is a godsend to someone who went down without the proper gear on.

I'll be uncomfortable, but at least I'll be in better shape when the ambulance comes to get me.

Yup, I am serious. I don't sweat when wearing mesh, so it's hot air on hot skin. If I am wearing my leathers (fully perf'd), I sweat, and the sweat evaporating keeps me cool.

I also don't get hot wearing full leathers. Get some good ones with some nice vents and a lot of perforations. And wear under armour.

I've lived in the desert for most of my life. I've always ridden throughout the year, during summer I'd stay hydrated and wear a jacket with good ventilation as well as protection. Then we found another solution a few years ago called a Phase Change Cooling Vest. These work well, they can be charged fairly quickly and maintain the charge for a couple of hours, long enough to go through a whole tank of gas while driving. They actually stay cold, they do not rely on evaporation. That's a great advantage because evaporation doesn't happen when the humidity is high.

Get practical gear. Read plenty of threads on various forums before settling on anything. Hit the online stores for last year's gear at a fraction of the costs.

I have mesh with waterproof liners for summer. I also have insulated gear for the winter. I can ride in Texas weather ranging from just below freezing to above 100 with comfort. This is the first time in three years that I've even had a cage as a backup. I'd forgotten what a Texas summer day with AC was like

Also, my summer gloves have mesh on the backs. My helmet is modular, so it stays open below about 40mph.

All my gear is now grey/silver, makes more of a difference than I initially thought. When I take my backpack on hot days, I strap it to the rear seat.

We have had 17 days of rain here--so I have not done much riding. I did do a 190mi Charity ride on my bicycle this weekend--miserable weather. In hot weather, I still like perforated leather. Being an old "greaser" from the 50`s, I like my black. I also like Slider Jeans--also black, and the typical square toed harness boot. I also wear very light driving gloves--which provide little to no protection. I have to honestly admit that I do not like all that armour that is popular today. I never needed it in the past 50 years. Then again, todays machines are faster--250`s= 750`s of the 60`s and we are dealing with "Distracted drivers" who have more GeGaws in their car than an F-15. I still like to be comfortable and like to enjoy my ride. I , quite honestly, find it a nuscance to have to "Armour Up" before every ride. It`s almost a throwback to mideival times when the knights had to armuor up to do battle. Todays helmets weigh a ton and make me feel like I am putting a pail on my head. Then at every traffic light I have to raise my face shield so that I can breathe. What ever happened to the Bell Magnum helmet? I have decided to be comfortable and enloy my ride. I bought a really nice comfortable leather MC jacket--First Gear and two pairs of Kevlar Slider Jeans in black. I have a Full Face HJC Helmet, but just bought an open face HJC. I realise that I am going against the grain with today`s Sport Riders, but I can`t get myself to wear all this stuff and feel miserable. I would much rather be comfortable and enjoy the ride.
