Side panels how to reinstall by seat?
I'm trying to get the side panels reinstalled properly on my 2009. I can get the 3 plugs to line up, but it's not high enough to get the screw in properly at the bottom.
I see there is a notch of plastic on the top center the goes by the front seat. Do both sides of that go behind the black plastic part attached to the bike, or do they go around that or in front of it? I think I have mine on the outside of it, because I seem to have a really big gap? Is there a trick to installing these things? Or maybe it's normal and I just don't remember there being such a big gap, but there is a plastic cut out on the panels which I assume does go somewhere and do something. ETA I handled them with a bit more force and got them to go around that black plastic rubber thing. They are now much more flush looking |

On mine, there's a metal tab coming off the tank with a rubber cover right near the top from edge of the seat. The catch part of the top of the side panel goes behind that (so the tab from the tank rests inside the catch on the panel.
I usually put that in first by slightly bowing the panel towards the tank, then push in the front plug, then the top back plug. The bottom back plug should just push in right after those two are in. The screw hole is a bit up and to the left when I just leave it there, but the screw aligns everything and holds it in. I can take pics if that might help? Oops just saw your edit...

Thanks Teri. I never thought that taking those off would be such a pain to get back in correctly.

It does get easier the more you do it.
If you haven't seen it yet, I would recommend this thread: http://www.ninjette.org/forums/showthread.php?t=9933 Go through at least once and remove everything. See how they fit together, what bolt goes where, and really look. It'll save a lot of headache when you have to take the plastics off to tinker inside.
