'98 Honda PC800 with 100k. It's not running right

, but I think for a couple of C notes, I'll give her a go. My good friend is getting a new bike and just wants it gone.

One of my favorite bikes. A decent bike with the practicality of a scooter.
Rather eclipsed over here by the Pan-European
Worth a bit of engineering. Under the svelte bodywork the engine looks quite industrial and makes no concessions to style.

Picked it up today.

Found that he just changed

Steering head bearings
Fork seals
Brake fluid
Brake pads
K&N air filter
New battery
Needs tires
Got the Honda service manual, too.

Now to figure out why it won't start. Cranks over, but backfires through the exhaust. Hoping it's electrical.
Looks pretty good for 100k mi.

Here's a '75 Z1 he restored from a $100 hulk we pulled out of a horse trailer. One kick starter now. It was ugly...

It is. I would still own mine if it hadn't been totaled.

Usually if they aren't running right, it's the carbs, but the '89s in particular are known for having electrical issues. If it hasn't been done already, I recommend upgrading the rectifier/regulator.

When I bought mine (an '89), it had a slight oil leak, so my friend and I tore it down and completely rebuilt the engine. It had over 80k miles on it, and ran like new.

I'm going to get another one eventually.

After taking some of the plastic off, I found it has Works Performance shocks on it, too.

Wow bike looks super clean for a 100,000 miles! Really good score for a couple hundred bucks. Even if you have to rebuild the engine its still a killer deal. Congrats

I had field mice chew the wiring for my 4wd on my truck. Nightmare right there.

Well, here's a video of what the bike sounds like.
Good spark at all four plugs (2 plugs per cylinder).
13.5v on a freshly charged battery.

Any ideas ideas/opinions welcome.

Valves hanging open due to excessive carbon build-up? It does have 100K on it.

If not that, some type of ignition timing problem.

Is it popping out the exhaust only, or intake also?

if its electrically good. Possibly the timing or valve clearances.

Also if its pretty old and sitting a while check the air box for anything funny. just in case.

PC800 has self adjusting hydraulic valves.

Just popping through the exhaust.
Hydraulic-type cam followers, no adjustment required.

Next step, I'll do a compression check.
Could be stuck valve caused by failed hydraulic unit.
Spark plugs are down in there deep, so I'm wondering if the comp. tester fittings will go in.

I would think if there was a mechanical problem with the system the valve would fail to open, and not hang open. Depending on the engine and port design, you might be able to see the exhaust valve stem if you pulled-off the header.

As I see it, either the spark is not timed correctly or the exhaust valve is not sealing completely when closed.

Hydraulic adjusted valves can still play havoc if they don't pump up all the way.

Running Seafoam through the crank case, to strip the varnish can do wonders to get them pumped back up.

Well I pulled the plugs out today and found this...still the originals according to my friend. Guess he got his money's worth.

Put a good plug in it and it fired right up.
