upgrading to 600rr
hey, so i've had my 250 since june of last year and i have loved every minutes of it but lately i've been wanting more. I think my issue is that although its a great ride i got a bit fat over the last year and now im at 220, and although i don't feel the need to go past 80 on the highway (which i rarely get on, mostly to catch a bit of speed every now and then) i really don't like the fact that that's become my top speed. can't forget that i get about 40mpg, thought it would be more since everyone quotes it at 65 which is ridiculous in a city apparently.
I can't afford much of anything atm but i have become very interested in the 600s particularly the cbr 600rr. My bike is still in borderline new condition, only ridden about 2500 miles so far giving it a total of ~5k miles (im the third owner). So i was hopping i could sell it for a decent price ~2800-3200 and use that towards an 07-08 cbr 600. I would do this a few months from now since its really cold and im down to riding once a week. but i wanted to know if anyone has ridden one before, what where some pros and cons compare to the 250? any tips on selling my bike? (never sold any vehicle before), should i consider trading it in to a dealer? What bike did you guys upgrade to and why? i haven't gotten a quote yet but my riding experience is under a year, do you all think that insurance will be significantly different? that actually matter a whole lot, specially since im doing ~$700 a year right now for the 250. Reasons for 600rr = love the look the most compared to other 600s, fuel gauge definitely a +, 0-60 in ~3 sec which sounds fast to me, and honda generally being a reliable manufacturer. but mostly i like the separated headlight and under tail muffler. |

The CBR 600 is physically a small bike at 220 pounds you might want to consider a CBR 1000

i have a 250 and a 600...see my sig...
i have close to 100k on three 250s...first one 28k, the 2nd 43k, and my current one i rode over 26k miles...i ride the 250 more because it has an upright riding position and so light and nimble around town...it is a hoot and more comfortable... now the 600 has a racing position that wears me down in an hour...at first it is hard on your wrist but you get used to it...i only put over 34k on it because it is primarily for canyon rides...it is very fast, handles better in the corners because of the better suspension, and reliable...you have to replace tires and brakes more often...yes it is a looker, specially the white silver color scheme, the undertail exhaust looks much cleaner... if you can not afford two bikes the 600 will be roomy and more than fast enough even for your heft...go to a dealer and sit on one and see how comfortable it is... i have sold and bought all my bikes through craigslist...you just look at all the 250s being sold so you get an idea what the market is...the 07 600 is about $4500+ depending on mileage and condition... |

I have almost 100 pounds on you, and my ninja will cruise at 85-90 no problem, it's been up to 100. I don't think weight is the issue here.
Just sayin!

If you problem is in your size, you should look into Triumphs, they seem to be built for taller people

I dont know what it is then but it definitely maxes out at ~85, just took it out a few hours ago. so idk, but i never tried doing 0-60 until today and i know skill is a big factor in this but i manage it in 10-15 sec, i saw the regular was seven seconds with skilled riders so idk if that normal.

also im only 5'8, dont really look huge for my weight, plus in college so money is tight, and at this point i really like sport bikes so ill probably look for 06 and earlier versions since i've found a few for under 4k.
ill go and sit on a few to get a feel for them and im glad to hear that they run good at 30k plus mileage, mileage that high tends to make me nervous since i dont want to be replacing or fixing stuff on it regularly. |

Seconded. I clock in at 230 myself and will hit 90 on the freeway if I'm not paying attention to what I'm doing. GPS says that I've maxed out at 99 ..

Insurance....
Bike has four times the performance, and might cost six times as much to insure. Depends. Get a quote before you do ANYTHING else.

love the 600rr, it's definitely my favorite 600 aesthetically and tied for favorite overall with the triumph 675 (r6 is in there in 3rd)
seconded on insurance, that's a large reason why I don't own a 600 for street use. If you like undertail exhaust you may like the triumph daytona 675 which is a stunningly beautiful bike as well with much cheaper insurance because it's not japanese...that's seriously what the insurance agent told me, non japanese/italian supersports are considered lower risk to them. Also yes, those things are monstrously fast if you open it up but remember that you only go as fast as your right wrist tells your bike to go, the brakes are a bigger threat if you try to brake the same way as you would on a 250 you may well flip over the bars since they're so much more powerful. Once again it's an easy thing to adjust to but it's something to keep in mind to do some panic braking practice again from scratch so you don't pull too much in a surprise situation.

I'd look into getting your 250 checked out. You're getting low MPG and poor performance. It's most likely not running at its full potential. Getting it tuned up won't make you think it's a 600, but it might be enough of a bump to make you less unhappy on it.
Quote:
It will most likely be way more expensive. Buy whatever you want, but I'd like to point out that there is a middle ground between a "beginner" Ninja 250 and full 600cc supersport. The Ninja 500 has twice the power of a 250. It's listed as 0-60 in 3.7 and can get up to 60mph in 2nd. The CBR500R has slightly less power, but I've heard that it's more usable throughout the RPM range. That might be a way to get a bump in power with some of the CBR benefits, without going to a full-blown 600. http://www.motorcycle-usa.com/9/1710...300---650.aspx compares it to a couple Ninjas (see their conclusions on the bottom of page 4). Check out http://cycle-ergo.com/ too - the CBR500R is closer to the 250 in riding position, wheres the CBR600RR is much more hunched over (because it's designed to be a race bike, not a commuter).

I've ridden them all.
the 600 is going to be a HUGE performance upgrade, it's not as light at the 250, but it's very light and todays 600's produce huge horse power so be ready for it. Standard is to pin the throttle on the 250 until you are going the speed you want to go. Do that on the 600 and you will be holding on for dear life. the CBR is much more of a race position, you are going to be hunched over the bars and tank a good bit more then the 250 (sit up pretty straight), but not as bad as say the Gixxer or my TLR. Just don't plan a 200 mile ride the first time, work up to it, your shoulders, back and core will get stronger, you just need to give them the time to do it. I find out every spring, takes about 2 weeks and i'm back to being good for 100 or so. and more cops, you go by a squad on a 250 they are all like "isn't that sweet" and go back to the doughnut... on a 600 at about 9000 rpm with a Yosh and they will be on you like stink on dookie |

To InvisiBill's point - the Honda 500 is sized to be much much more like a full sized bike than the 250/300. It would not be a poor choice.
But if you want a 600RR and that is what your mind/heart is set on ....... that is your choice. I cross shopped the Honda and the Kawi very closely when I bought my 6R and had they been willing to come down a bit on the Honda I would have had it. There was nothing between the two. I personally find my 6R to be a horrible commuter and it would NOT .... ABSOLUTELY NOT be my only bike if I was allowed just one. But it does what it was designed to do very well .... go fast in the twisty bits.
