Finger strength on a short bit should be all thats required, you want the tip to fit the screw slot correctly, the diameter can be ground down to perfect size, as needed to enter the pilot screw cavity.
Warm engine and temporarily raising your idle a bit...the sweet spot will become more prominent (easier to hear) as you adjust the screw in/out , of course looking for your highest idle and best throttle response for *each* cylinder. When complete, lower your idle speed and double check that RPM's rise instantly with throttle application...and drop correctly..no hanging or "hunting"....dropping then raising. Needless to say, idle speed should be consistent and steady. Of course, this is entirely predicated on having clean, calibrated carb circuits, fresh fuel, functional ignition system (spark plugs) and valves with correct clearance. Good luck.

That's the one that I learned about shortly after getting my ten year old 250. There's no point in trying to get the carbs adjusted correctly until you're sure the valves are set correctly.
