My current gear set-up

Sup guys! Only been riding on the street for a week now, but been riding dirt for 19 years. Soooo, critique my current setup, and/or give suggestions on improving it!

Helmet - Scorpion EXO-700, Chameleon. Last years model, so got it cheap!
http://www.motorcyclecloseouts.com/s...pion+chameleon

Jacket - Teknic Chicane leather jacket, 2008 model. Found it in a pawn store, so got this one super cheap too!
http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com...et---2008.aspx (Mine's white/silver/black/blue)

Pants - Um, unfortunately, nothing. Still trying to figure this one out. I wear jeans or my dress pants.

Gloves - Alpinestars SP2.
http://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/a...rs-sp-2-gloves

Boots - Sidi Vertigo Airs. Bought these used on craigslist, another killer deal!
http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com...Air-Boots.aspx

So there you go. Thoughts?

Pretty good start you got there. Just missing some pants and a back/chest protector. Keep going!

What do you think of the Sidi Vertigo Air boots? I have the regular Vertigo boots, which feel incredibly sturdy and provide a ton of protection, but I wish I had purchased the air variety b/c my feet sweat. The salesman told me that the air variant was only useful on the track. I don't know how that works, but that's why I didn't buy them. I'm curious what you think.

+1 to the back protector and DEFINITELY buy a pair of riding pants. I rode for a little while without them, then I nearly bought them, and that night I crashed and tried to dent the pavement with my knee. I limped to the store the following day and picked them up. I have worn them every day since. Well, almost every day...

PS: The pavement is hard and hits back when you try to eff it up.

The salesman is kinda right, the Vertigo Air's do vent some additional air at highway/track speeds. Anything under that, and it don't really matter that much between the two unless it's cold air, such as winter time, then you will feel it at lower speeds.

Look into some moisture wicking socks to help keep your feet dry for those long hot rides in the boots.

Pants are definitely your next step. I wear over pants, (scorpion deuce) daily. I like them because they flow air well, will still provide slide protection, some knee and hip protection, and go on and off easily. The zip in liner is nice too. Jeans and slacks provide zero slide protection, and obviously no padding. My next step is Kevlar jeans with knee/hip pads for days when I don't want to lug around my over pants.

The boots are good, but could be better IMO. I like the sidi st and Vortice because they provide really good ankle roll protection, unlike the vertigo. I have the regular st and love them. The adjustable calf and ankle protection was worth the cost upgrade from the vertigo for me. I tried on the vertigo and cobra and could easily roll my ankle... Not so in the st.

When I ride to work, I am wear dress socks, when I ride for fun, I wear athletic socks (preferably the over-knee variety with three gaudy stripes - on those days, I also wear really tight, really aggressively cut running shorts b/c "I'm too sexy").

I wear the Rev'It Airwave pants, which function well as over pants and well on their own. They flow air well, though when wearing dress slacks under them, my legs cook even at highway speed. I recommend them, but they're a bit pricey as most Rev'It gear tends to be.

I hadn't considered the point about the Vertigo air not flowing air except at track speed. Generally when commuting, I am doing 70-80 MPH, which is probably enough to blow air through the boot. Alas, I will just deal with my schweaty tootsies.

Any thoughts on the Sidi Doha boots? I am not inclined to think they'd be a good option because they're not over-the-ankle footwear, but I'd like your thoughts.

Yea, I was actually suuuuper surprised about the airflow in my vertigo airs. I can feel the wind coming in even at like 35 mph. However, keep in mind, I have zero experience with street/track boots.

I'm definitely going to upgrade these boots later, maybe next season. I agree with the other dude who said that he didn't feel any ankle protection....I can roll my ankle in the boots as well. I don't like that idea, lol.

There isn't really much to critique. You have a pretty good set of gear already! As stated before, though, make sure to eventually get a back protector. I feel much safer in mine!

And who honestly needs pants? I'm sure a kilt will suffice.

Lol....

Any suggestions for good back protectors? Also, what are some good pants that can go over my work pants?

I'm going to quote myself, which I have never done before. These pants are great if you're willing to drop $200.

As for back protectors, I have the Dainese Wave for my Shotgun and the A* RC protector for my leather jacket. I need to get an aftermarket protector for my track suit, since that thing is a flimsy piece of crap.

These have been tested by a friend of mine who flew of a 20ft embankment, through trees, finally landing onto some large rocks. Between the helmet and this, they most likely saved his life that day.

Damn, I didn't even see that. Thanks man, I'll check them out.

Kinda looks like the Lazer Tag vest I had when I was a kid. I wonder if someone shoots you in the chest with a ray gun if you light up like a Christmas tree. I think that feature should be investigated.

Lol! I will try the lazer out and let you know.

Found this too as an alternative back protector for $39 on closeout if it will fit you.

My friend crash tested this one too at Putnam park. Held up just fine and did its job.

There's a guy at my college that wears this on the outside of his shirt (not sure why...either it's uncomfortable to wear under your shirt or he just wants to show off).

Anyways, the vest doesn't look half bad and he doesn't look uncomfortable in it.

Oh and BTW, I don't stalk him. I think it may sound like this based on my post

hmmmm

I do the same, over the shirt. Never tried to wear it under. There are 3 or 4 others who have this same vest in the group I ride with and they all where it over their shirt as well.

For me its; tshirt -> back protector -> jacket
