What's the general cost of a 15k (major) service?
I have a '08 250r which I bought with about 10k miles on it. I'm sitting at 13k now and have done an oil/filter change and a rear tire change. It needs sprocket/chain work but with the 15k service coming up soon, I decided to lump them together and possibly do the major service at 14k instead.
That being said, what's the generally expected cost/timeframe of a 15k major service? I know it depends on labor cost, so let's say something like $80/hr. Obviously, if something crazy comes up that needs repairs that will have to be done, but let's not go there for now. Thanks. |

At 15k it's mostly just the valve adjustment you need to do. Brake fluid might be a good idea too.
For valves and oil it cost me $500 at a local shop. I no longer use them and have a friend of mine do it for half the price. I try to do everything on my bike but can't bring myself to do the valves so if I were you I'd do the sprocket and chain swap. Any work on the bike you do yourself is a great learning experience. Where in CA are you? |

I'm in the San Francisco area (Oakland).
I would like to do things myself but my concern is that I won't do it properly and end up damaging the bike somehow. |

There's a plethora of information in the DIY thread. I was pretty much in the same boat when I first got my bike but with the help of this site I slowly gained the knowledge and experience needed to properly maintain the bike. Welcome to the site!

The majority of general maintenance can be done without the aid of an $80/hr technician.. As Broilmebk said, there's so many DIY threads both here on the site and on YouTube, it's almost a no-brainer to learn how to do things yourself.. The more you know how to do yourself, the more you'll understand your bike, and the more you'll enjoy the overall experience..
Personally, I have a lot of fun swapping parts in and out on my '09.. Each time I take something apart, I learn just a little more.. My oldest son is more mechanically inclined than I am, but I'm trying to catch up.. My next adventure is learning how to repair fairings.. |

That was in Norway (Scandinavia). They charged me 5 or 6 hours of labour. They inspected the valves, but said that they did not need any adjustments. It cost me 8105 NOK, which for the moment seems to be 1004.15 USD. |

Alright, I decided to do the sprocket/chain myself. I'm not sure about valve adjustment or even checking to see if it needs one, though. Leaning towards just having that done at the shop but taking all advice.

I'm afraid it's quite normal over here, or even slightly cheaper than average.
(For example one guy reported about 7000 NOK for a 24000 km service on his (larger) Yamaha.) The price per labour hour for auto repair shops can be much higher, easily up to 1500 NOK /hour, which today seems to equal about 188 USD / hour. For repairing your motorcycle, I expect somewhat lower costs per labour hour than for cars. I recently read that Trondheim, where I work, was the most expensive city in the world, according to some data. It might not be far from the truth; http://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living...ity2=Trondheim The country is still rich, "high" on oil & gas. But the party might be over soon.. |

I've had really good luck with Berkeley Performance Motorcycle on Gilman St., they have fair pricing and decent turn-around.
