Bought My First Zook!

In my continuing quest to find the perfect bike 'for me', I sold my 300 and bought a GSX650F. They only released these in the US in 2008-2009, so finding one in good condition was a challenge. Well, I not only eventually found one, I found a 'new' one -- a 0 mile 2008. And it happened to be just under 200 miles from me.

The dealership actually had a used one as well, and I intended to buy that one, as it was cheaper. So my (amazing) wife rode with me 3 hours into nowhere-PA, so she could drive the car back. We got there, I test rode the used one, decided I wanted it, and tried to buy it. But the dealer couldn't find the title! So I asked him to call the owner and find out how much he could discount the new one, so that I could still make a purchase that day. He did, the owner gave me a reasonable number, so I handed over my credit card. I took the wife out to lunch, got a transit tag from AAA, and put the bike's first 200 miles on it coming home. Left at 7am, got home at 8:30PM, but a good day overall.

The only pic I have so far:

What, you don't like the boat anchor?

Most people comment on the cannon exhaust before the rear fender, but I have to say -- I actually like the exhaust. I think the shape and material match the bike, and it keeps the noise and tone at a really nice level. However, they say a slip-on can cut over 20 pounds!!! Count another, what, 80? for rear fender?

the exhaust is to each their own, stock fenders are just bad taste I say that and yet I still have mine on lol

Is that a Suzuki? What is a transit tag and how do you get one from AAA which is not a MVD?

"No where, PA" is anywhere besides Pittsburg, Harrisburg , or Phili in PA.

State College, PA. Unsurprisingly, the town that hosts Penn State.

Yup, SuZOOKi. It's a remapped, revvy, faired Bandit. It's heavy in parking lots, but damn near perfect as a street bike once you start moving faster than 10mph.

A transit tag is what allows you to purchase a vehicle from a state in which you cannot register it (because you are not a resident). In close states, like the DC/MD/VA area, all dealers can take care of tags and paperwork for all states. But in the middle of PA, they can only do PA. So you have to go to a special tags&title place to get a transit tag (or to the DMV, but seriously who would choose to do that?). It turns out that AAA provides this service as well, and much more cheaply than most tags/title places.

Looking good Travis! I'm warming up to Suzuki more and more these days.

Does it make that wine heard on the Gixxers? How does it compare to the Street Triple?

Nice pictures! That is one good looking bike.

I just noticed - you have a hydraulic clutch right? Very cool feature.

Yup, whines pretty good. I actually REALLY like the sound. It's quite racey, without being obnoxious.

It's exactly what I was looking for, in comparison to the Streety -- not as hooligan, not as twitchy, not as fast -- but ALMOST as powerful for everyday use. It's just so much SMOOTHER. For those who are looking only for the biggest rush, the GSXF lays down its power in far too civilized a manner, I expect. But for an everyday bike, a sometimes tourer, and an only rarely trackbike, it's really a great compromise. Smooth and easy going, with plenty of torque everywhere; but if you do want to hammer it, reminds you that it's a middleweight I4. Pretty cool bike.

Yup, hydraulic. However, it actually feels heavy after the 300, so I don't know if my frame of reference is too skewed, or if it's not really that big a benefit in terms of light clutch-pull. It IS a 5 year-old bike, though, so I'll have the mechanic bleed what's in there and put fresh for my break-in service. Maybe that has something to do with it? Other than that, it doesn't really feel noticeably different. There might be too much new to learn to hone in on it now. Shifting is a bit clunky, which may be me, the gearbox, the clutch, or some combination. I've heard that Suzuki's gearboxes wear in nicely, such that any clunk I experience now will go away. And it *does* feel like the clutch engagement is a bit vague, which some people claim is an affect of hydraulic vs. cable clutches. I'm betting its mostly just me getting used to the engagement zone, new gearbox, new powerband, etc.

I know! Well, we can still get a ride together, I'll just have to work harder to keep up after my downgrade.

$5100 OTD. Pretty happy with that, but if I had gone used, I would have had some money left over for Givis or a Sargent seat. Oh well, I'll just have to ride her for now.

I thought so. In 2008, they were $7k, so basically got $2k off just because it wasn't made this year. I'm happy with it.

Also: did the 600 mile break-in service today, so it's good to ride for another several thousand miles!
