Front End. Sonic Fork Springs
I picked up a low mile 2012 last winter as my "extra" bike. The stock front end obviously was much softer than the rear suspension. I wanted to improve the front end with stiffer springs and a fork oil change.
At my 210 lbs the charts indicated .75kg to 085kg would be good. Not doing track days and with most of the roads in Nebraska being straight and filled with pot holes and seams, I was looking for a compliant but not to soft front end. I went with the .75kg springs, 14wt fork oil (15wt with a pinch of 5wt) 104mm from the top of the tube with forks compressed. Preload is 9mm above the fork tube top with forks extended. In addition I tightened the slightly loose neck bearings. I write just to say that I am very pleased with the results. The ride is still compliant but with the front suspension more closely matching the rear. The bike feels more stable in turns but I still have good front end feel. The hands off the bars front end wobble was also greatly reduced. If you have canyons to ride in maybe go to .80kg springs but for my use I highly recommend this upgrade. |
