Last night we got a call from a nurse late at night. It's because Kevin wrote down mom's phone number. He had to remember that and pull it out of his memory. So she called.

Until I have some actual concrete data to show me otherwise, Kevin is and will always be thought of as a very capable young adult that has a promising future ahead of him if he applies himself. He is applying himself like crazy right now. This accident has the possibility of just being a blip in his life. I actually focus more on his life more than his recovery as my positive attitude feels he WILL recover so not everything has to focus on that. Recovery will happen from what I have seen!

However, we also understand that there is a long way to go and there are many issues to overcome. Kevin loves to beat the odds and he has an opportunity to do that in a way that can be so beneficial to him in his life. He is so capable.
This is wonderful news.
Any signs of paralysis? It may not be permanent if there is. I've paralyzed my left shoulder in the past and regained full use of it. So even if there are parts of him not moving well, don't be discouraged.

Kevin still can't move his left arm but he tells us that he does feel the sensation of pain in it and is regaining some minor feeling just below his shoulder.

He tells me this is what happens when nerves are repairing and reconnecting. I'm still holding lots of hope that he will fully recover. At this point regardless of where he ends up he's surpassed all of our wildest dreams and I couldn't be more excited to have my friend around.

Talking

Couldn't sleep...found this thread.

Great progress! Been tearing up a bit over this thread, so awesome to see a community pull together, lots of love here.

I remember finding his youtube page, watching the first video and saying "that dude works across the street from my gf's house!"

Keep fighting! Hope to meet you all someday.

Hello. I met Kevin on this board and we are facebook friends and have chatted there a few times as well, but never met in person. Can I go visit him in the hospital? When and where please? Thank you

Wow I didn't even think to update this thread! Kevin should be doing it himself by now

Lots of rehab and healing to go but Kevin has a bit of good news. For the threads that I've seen started this way that did not have a happy ending I can say that this is not the case for Kevin.

Kevin was discharged from the hospital on 12/18/13

a couple people have asked me about kevin so here is a little update

all things considered i would say kevin is doing very well. he has been travelling a bit for surgeries. his spinal cord damage still gives him a lot of pain though and it seems like there isn't really any medicine that can help it. he just had a surgery to relocate some nerves from his ribs to his arm to give him some control of his bicep once they grow in. i think a big surgery to give some control of his shoulder is in about a year. but before that, once he recovers from this surgery he will be having some work done on his spine to try to help with the pain he is going through.

kevin has come a very long way. and i think that a very large part of that is thanks to the very talented and hard working doctors, nurses, and technicians who do really incredible things. i wish there was some way to thank them outside of thanking them every chance i get. thank you, modern medicine.

i think that it is important that people understand the risks of what they are doing. be careful out there. understand your own limitations and stay well within them. always assume the worst. take care of your equipment. stay safe.

It's great to hear that Kevin continues to improve, but the words of advice are appropriate. This weekend, I was riding in North Wales and there were a lot of bikes. There were also a lot of accidents too. In fact I witnessed two accidents in the space of 30-minutes, both of which involved trips to ER.

Now that the warm weather is here and everybody's out there enjoying it - please be careful.

I talked to him on the phone for an hour today. Sounds like he's doing well considering how he's been doing. He's in less pain than before, though still a large amount, and in typical Kevin fashion is maintaining high spirits.

I was off the forum when this happened but I heard about it months later on Facebook.

I met Kevin twice and both times he struck me as wise beyond his years, so it was even harder for me to accept that this could happen to him at his age. Then I saw how he was bouncing back and remembered that this was Kevin we're dealing with: of course he's going to continue to live his life to the fullest without letting this hold him back!

I may be late getting to this thread to express my well-wishes, but I'm glad he's OK and I wish him a speedy recovery!

Anyway, does he still check here at all?

In a way he's very lucky that he has the opportunity to turn that new chapter. I hope he sees a full recovery and I wish him the best of luck in all future endeavors.

i talk to kevin almost every day. he recently started school in oregon. he lives on his own with a roommate. i would say he is doing very well. he has to live with constant intense nerve pain every day but he always manages to see the positive aspects of life. quite a trooper.

Inspiring!

This is a truly inspiring story. We should really pull this out and make it sticky. If others are faced with a similar situation, it could provide much needed hope. Miracles do happen, and this story is an example of exactly such a thing.
