Clutch release kills the motor "Seems to be kickstand switch"

I have an 89 ninja 250 with a 2002 motor in it. When I release the clutch it dies. I can't seem to find neutral and the kickstand sensor is cut by the previous owner. The bike was crashed but not severely. I reamed this thing to 8k and dropped the clutch and it just kills itself. Anyone have anywhere I can start or something I can do to make sure it isn't the transmission? (It will shift up and down)

The front brake is disconnected. Not sure if that matters.

On new gens, at least, the kickstand switch will prevent the engine from running even with the clutch pulled in. How does it die? Is it like a switch or more of a sputters out -- particularly if you let the clutch out very slowly?

It is a switch type cutoff.

It will matter as soon as you fix the problem, go riding fast and need to stop quickly.

I'm debating switching to GP-style because everyone who uses it says it's nicer for solid upshifts. Plus then your toe isn't on the deck when you're shift up coming out of turns.

Sounds like maybe it would be more useful for track days? I don't want to switch back and forth or else I'll get confused.

Hold off on it chone. Basically don't make the switch until you find yourself draggin' your toe alot. Why would you think I recommend that?

Well I've not dragged toes at all on street at all last season. Last season was when I started being a little more responsible and keeping it at a sane speed. idk, just kinda scared myself one too many times, then track ruined street for me

I dragged toes once or twice coming out of the left transition after the carousel. I was also WOT at that point and I always had trouble transitioning my BP fast enough on that one.

Because it will get confusing if I transition to other bikes? Not sure.

I think it is awesome it feels a lot more natural to be honest just make sure it is adjusted properly because down shifts become harder. My friend highly recommends it too and he rides street with it or did at least until i got is bike . actually he is on the forum @KChatham

i honestly have no idea why manufacturers ship bikes in standard shift pattern instead of GP shift. every sport bike should be gp shift.

It's the law (federal vehicle standards). First gear needs to be all the way at the bottom, and neutral needs to be between first and second. Making it easily switchable is certainly a nice feature, just like having adjustable foot controls / hand controls etc.

Maybe I have giant feet but I would routinely scrape my boot in turns while normally placed on the peg and yet, according to Kevin2109, I had the biggest chicken strips ever.

Meh. I commuted on Interstates daily and racked up tens of thousands of flat miles so: of course.

That just means you're sticking the peg on the arch of your foot.

I ride on the balls of my feet, which are the weight-supporting parts behind your toes. I've been told that it's proper and my size 13 boots cant avoid the shifter otherwise! "Routinely" is a bit of an exaggeration. My Joe Rocket boots lasted me over three years of daily commuting!

He's been to the track so i assume he has common sense to not go fast with a rear only brake. Also sounds like he is in the process of fixing said bike and hasn't got to that point.

...I'm aware what the ball of your foot is. I'm a runner.

Well get smaller feet and make sure you're not duck-toed. If you keep scraping, use your toes yo!!

I know the issue has been solved but just a heads up: you can just bypass the switch all together by tracing the wires coming out of the switch up to where they plug into the main harness. Mr. Kawasaki was nice enough to make the terminals on each wire opposite. So you literally unplug the switch, and plug the two wires off the harness into each other.

Obviously, if you still use your kickstand it is probably a good idea to use the switch, but this is an easy trick for troubleshooting a problem if you believe the switch to be faulty.
