End of the day.
This was the Best. Day. Ever. (Besides my first weekend, of course). It's weird. Some sort of switch got flipped in my reptilian brain. Totally confident, MUCH faster than before. It felt easy all day... like I could put the bike anywhere, ride around anyone. I guess all the questions, observation, patient teaching, etc. etc. just finally clicked into place. So cool. Big breakthrough, and I don't know how it happened. Really glad it did, though! PS: Ant (@Ducati999) and I got video of each other dicing and dragging knee for several laps. Stay tuned.

No, this was the exit of that steep diving left-hander.
He said he got messed up by having his foot in the wrong place -- toe was touching, and it sounds like he was distracted a bit by that, trying to get it back up. Then he added a tiny little bit too much throttle at max lean and bingo. He got it on camera, and based on the brief glimpse I got it looked to me like he was making some sort of correction mid-corner. The bike conveniently spun around and the camera caught him tumbling off the road, then standing up and giving the OK to the corner worker. I probably have the bike down and Ant looking over the wall on my on-board. Have yet do review the video. I will say that the skid marks made for a nice visual reference on subsequent laps... I'm sure @Ducati999 will chime in with the details. PS: Lesson learned... if your buddy goes down it's REALLY hard to not look at him. I gave a quick glance but even that's not right if you're cranking out of a corner like that.

I find in those Palmer bowl turns especially the smaller right hander decreasing apex I have to really hang off to keep the boot from touching the ground. Even then I scrape the outside of my knee pucks more than the front surface of them - odd.

Sorry I lost track of this thread and posted the entire write up of my crash in the "How to find the edge" thread in the "Riding Skills" section.
A little recap on this past season. With the lessons learned at Mid Ohio and all the other track days this year my speeds have increased quite a bit especially around a more familiar track like Palmer. Not only did my skills improve but I also have managed to get my bike set up better for me. Crashing in turn 7 was just a bunch of stupid little mistakes leading up to the final mistake. I have learned that the lack of fitness was the overall cause of this fall and I should have noticed the signs earlier and slowed down rather than try to keep pushing--but I was having so much fun! Running into turn 7 faster than I should have, not getting my foot correctly on the peg and too much throttle at too steep a lean angle all lead to the end of the season. I am glad I was not hurt and the bike can be repaired but I could have learned the same lesson without sliding across the track! Congratulations to @adouglas for his success this season! He has earned his Skill. I hope to have many more seasons riding with him and all my friends from Ninjette.org |

@juan1,
Sorry to hear you crashed. What model Ducati is that? Looks like you have a lot of R/SP bits on there but I cant tell what model it is as they all look the same on the outside. I really want those same rims for my 748/916 and I already have the Ohlins shock. I would also love to hear the write up of what happened to cause your high side. |

Cant even imagine the torque of the 999RS motor! My 999 stretches your arms out at full throttle and your motor will run 2-3,000 more RPM and another 30-50 HP more also! You wouldn't happen to have another RS motor just lying around would you? My 748 just happens to need a new motor! I had originally intended to make the 748 into a 853 but now I think I will just swap in a 916 since I have all the parts, unless I find a better motor someplace! I hope to make it to NJMP in the next season or two and I will send you a message when I am headed that way to see if you will be at the track then. Hope you have a great season this next year and let me know if you come across a good Desmo motor or some SP\SPS cams! |

I am tearing apart the motor on the 748 right now to decide on what to do next with that bike. I have poured some cash into making the 999 a full track bike and I may just set the 748 up for the street. A lot will depend on what I find when I get deep inside the motor. I may just buy a 1098 motor and throw that in there!

Funny you should ask as I was just planning an update! The biggest issue with the Ducati motors is that they have those huge pistons (nearly 4X the ninja 250's) shaking the motor to death. The higher you rev them the more abuse all the parts take but because of the Desmodromic system, they keep making power right until redline and sometimes past! All the race motors and special model motors they make (RS, SP, R and SPS) need to be rebuilt more often because they use more RPM to make their power. I have managed to split the cases and inspect all the bearings and shims. I also went back through the heads and still cant figure out what was making the "noise" I was hearing! The valves were within spec in their guides and the adjusters were still right where they were after the last adjust--this was expected as I only put 4-500 miles on it since the last valve adjust. We did find a few thousandths of play on the main crank bearings and the rod bearings had wear but had not spun and could not have been the source of the clanking I heard. We did find a small Alum. washer under the crank inspection cover but based on the end of the crank and the condition of the washer, it was just floating in the small space and could not have caused the sound either. I have begun ordering bearings and getting all the parts I need to et this motor reassembled as a 916! My father and I think that once the bottom is back to "factory spec", should there be any noises, they must be from the heads! Sorry to hear your motor is not well @Jaun1, hope you can have it sorted out by spring. Should you need anything don't be afraid to send me a private message and I will send you my phone number so we can talk. I promise to put up some pictures once I get this last gear off the 748 crank. I still cant believe how easy it is to disassemble a Ducati motor! The worst part was getting the bolt out that passes thru the case and the Single sided swingarm! |
