Hit and Run in Vancouver
Sigh.
Please read here for my little story: http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/va...490802626.html The number one thing that I get asked is "is it really a hit and run if you never made contact?" and yes, it is, according to my insurance (ICBC, the monopoly insurance broker in British Columbia Canada). The second thing is "how did you slide 30m when you went 50kph" I don't know, but it hurts. |

Oh yes. And this is the first time this bike has touched cement, and the first accident I have ever been in (car, scooter, bike, whatever).
It took me several years to save up for this bike and when I finally bought it I cried. This was in August 2012. AUGUST. FML |

It always sucks when an accident is caused by someone else. Were you just wearing jeans when you spilled? And to be sure, this was before it started snowing right?

Amanda,
I am very sorry after reading your story. It was a miracle that you didn't get seriously burned with all that gasoline and sparks !! Hope that you get some compensation from the wrong doing driver and that your wounds heal fast enough for you to go back to your work. At 50 km/h, you were covering 13.9 m per each second. Your bike and you were skidding for 4.3 seconds. For emergency braking, it would have taken around 14 m to react and start covering and pulling the brake lever plus around 12 m to come to a stop: total distance 26 m. Best !

sorry about the accident Amanda,
i'm thankful you had good people around you. it definitely helps when witnesses are there to prove you were not at fault.

Added a pdf version to your post. All craigslist posts expire and are removed in a short time, which would make threads like this not particularly useful after a week without an archive.

Holy crap. I am so sorry to hear this. While I'm overwhelmed by how well people in the community at responded, I'm also deeply saddened by your situation and enraged by this irresponsible driver. I've had several hit-and-run experiences on my bicycle and skateboard, mostly when I was still in highschool, and it astounds me when people slow, see what they've done, and then zoom off. I sincerely hope for your speedy recovery, and that the person in the sedan comes forward and learns from the experience.

Sorry to hear about your accident. So terrible that your health and your beautiful ninjette have been damaged. So wonderful though that there were all those great people -- strangers! -- around you when you crashed who helped you out. I hope you find and receive restitution from the person who hurt you.

Sucks to hear happen. I hope you're doing okay. Have you started to look back to see what you could have done to avoid this again? From the first paragraph of the story I caught this:

If you were travelling southbound on Boundary why does your craigslist picture show your bike fallen on 18th and Boundary.
https://maps.google.ca/maps?hl=en&ll...,30.52,,0,15.2 This googlemap image is equivalent to your fallen bike picture on craigslist. So which street exactly did this person turn out from? If you passed Linwood heading south on Boundary why does the picture show 18th and Boundary. Did it slide down the hill? So you said they turned from a T-intersection, which would be Canada Way/Schou St. The picture in craigslist shows the bike fallen on 18th St, which means your bike slid for well over 50m going up a hill are you sure your speed was only 50kph? |

Hello! Yes, I'm glad you asked that question. The Boundary and Linwood address is what I gave the police and ICBC while on the hospital bed. It was after I wrote this Craigslist ad that I saw the pics the witness sent me. While on the ground I didn't notice which intersection it happened at. I was going at a regular speed, matching traffic. I told the police that I was going 60kph but not sure as I didn't catch my speedo before I fell. That, and I did a lot of rolling. Please shine the light away, it burns! Last futzed with by kirbie; December 23rd, 2012 at 11:36 PM. Reason: Clarification of wording |

that sucks big time! I swear that 99% of the drivers here are 99% ignorant of anything going on outside their own vehicle. Once had a buddy get clipped while skating and his shoulder took her mirror off. We caught up to the car at the next light and scared her half to death by beating on the windows. She had no bloody idea she had even hit him.
Noooobody driving is paying attention. *oh yeah.... And F*** ICBC. |

this happened a couple blocks from my work, I was actually riding by when i saw her on the ground holding both her legs, everyone was already on scene by this time. It kind of spooked me because drivers dont see riders at night. Every since that night I wear my reflective vest every night I ride. Good luck with your recovery
