Oh Deer

Today on my commute to work at around 5:45 this morning little Bambi decided to run out right in front/into me... Well, it is one way to wake up in the morning, and I was only a minute away from the job site

I was going around 50-60 mph and Bambi's head was just past the front of my bike as we collided.

I am okay, didn't wreck or anything and the bike is okay mechanically. The front fairings are not so well..

Any suggestions on how to repair them quick/easily, I don't think that it is worth buying new ones for my bike.

What's for dinner?

I'd leave the hair in that reflector forever. What a conversation piece.

Glad to hear you're alright! Deer can be a career ender, sounds like you handled it perfectly.

I buy my parts through partshark.com. They sell OEM stuff at below retail (although for plastics that can still be pricey).

Maybe search Craigslist or even some of the other Kawi quarter litre bike forums.

Yeah...no better way to pick up girls than to tell them you killed a baby deer (accidentally). I'm sure that will go over well.

You can piece them back together with fibre glass patch on the inside, won't look that great though, kinda like a jigsaw puzzle on the outside.

I loved the idea of keeping the hair though, I would steam them down flat and throw a clear coat on them.

deer are so freaking dumb! God graced them with the ability to run and jump, not think...

glad you're doing alright! I've seen my buddy's bike after a deer put him on the pavement. Poor fz1.

As for repairs, fiberglass the inside to stop the cracks. Then bondo, sanding, and paint should make it good as new.

Glad you're ok. The animal lover in me can't help feeling for little Bambi. Hubby gets onto me all the time about feeling sorry for the deer. I can't help it. lol! Seriously though, good for you not crashing. Could have ended MUCH worse for you and your bike.

thats their survival instinct.
if something startles them they just bolt in a straight line out of there.
they usually run until they cross a boundary then they reassess.

the boundary could be the road, a fence or whatever.
their logic is that coyotes and wolves wont follow them afterwards.

You were lucky. Surely it's not that expensive to pick up some second-hand fairings for a pre-gen?

well i guess the hairs are staying lol

thanks for all of the support

I would have felt bad for the deer but it ran right into me... why do they do that

Does anyone know what this would fall under for insurance? I have the bare minimum, I think, and not to sure if I should even contact the insurance company. My policy says, Total Loss Coverage: None. I'm worried that if they would end up totaling the bike that I would not be compensated

If its truly liability only, they wont pay for repairs.

if you found most of the fairing pieces, you should be able to repair it yourself.

Definitely do this. I love reading what others do to their ninja's, and be sure to take pics! What paint are you using, and what color?

Fixing My Bike

Before Picture

At first glance I didn't think my bike was to badly damaged, but after removing all the fairing screws and having it fall into pieces I thought differently..

After removing the fairing I also noticed the radiator was smashed in, appears to be working fine though.

Also, when I went to remove the front wheel, the nut was completely loose, only thing holding it on was the cotter pin.

Stripped Down

My original idea was to just fix the fairing up and re-paint it black. That lead to, paint the whole bike! My neighbor was on vacation for the week so I was able to use her garage, until today..

JB Weld

Plastic piece I made

Sanded down some

Before Bondo

Sloppyyyy

After A LOT of sanding

My JB Weld and Bondo failed..

How I fixed it

My front fender was also cracked from hitting the deer so instead of fixing it I decided to chop it down, eliminating the cracked part.

Everything ready for primer

If I had to do this again I would use FILLER primer instead of just sandable primer like I did

First coat of primer

Many coats of primer

Time for paint!!!

I only have the front fender done due to lack of time after work and the weather, oh and getting kicked out of my neighbors garage.. but I think it looks great so far!

Great job! I would suggest ABS cement instead of JB Weld though. I plan to fill in some holes on a new fiberglass fairing but I heard that Bondo will crack and fall out when used on motorcycles and other high-vibration applications. Let me know how it holds up for you!

Well, after completely painting EVERYTHING, I applied the clear coat and...

EVERYTHING TURNED A YELLOWISH TINT!!!

Now I know, use a "non-yellowing" clear coat.

I am very upset with DupliColor though, there is no precaution, warning, label, or even the slightest hint that yellowing may occur on light colors.

I have contacted them and am in the process of trying to receive a refund for everything, because all of the materials went to waste primer, paint, clear...

I have now used Krylon Gloss White and Krlon Acrylic enamel non yellowing of course..

I have the rear fairing, tank, and front fender done and wow, just look at the difference

More pictures and update to come, so here are some progress pics for now

Very nice considering it is a rattlecan spray job, sprayed outside in my yard.

Thank You!

The JB isn't to flexible, this has been all new to me for the most part so it has been a learning process trying to figure out what works best.

The epoxy I fixed it with was a stronger product, the JB I used was the quick dry stuff.

I haven't read anything much on bondo on motorcycles but so far it is hard as a rock and I scuffed up the areas where it contacted the parts so I will find out.

I'm not really sure why since my favorite color is blue.

I could only find a handful of white pre gens and thought it looked very clean. My jacket and gloves match too but I didn't think of that at the time I choose white.

Thanks, I used JB Weld and Bondo.. the JB Weld was to hold the broken pieces together but it didn't hold up.

I read that ABS Plastic Cement is a better product to use since the bike's plastics are ABS. It can be used to fill small holes by using multiple coats or layers.
