Bogs down when accelerating, max 5-7k RPM
Hey Guys,
Just found this site and loving it already. I have a 2006 250 and recently started having issues. It started bogging down on me last night when accelerating. Sitting in neutral and revving it up upon starting it and it wouldn't get over 6k RPM's. when I go to take off it bogs down around same RPM level then will die when I come to a stop. Then it becomes very difficult to start unless I let it sit a while. Then same problems when I try again. Any ideas or help would be appreciated. |

Welcome Jeff!
To help us figure out your issue can you answer the following please? How many miles? Last time the carb was cleaned? Last time the valves were checked/adjusted? Last oil change? Any mods to exhaust/airbox/jetting?

Hmmm... 17k huh.
Possibilities then; Simple, quick and cheap fixes Clogged fuel filter Petcock issues Air filter issues Bad gas/water in gas? Flush and fill Use some Seafoam or similar product More involved fixes but still pretty cheap and easy Gummed up/dirty carbs (Use the new howto vid!) Valve check/adjustment

Another thought, vacuum leak. A quick spray mist of carb cleaner around the vac lines will rev the engine if you have a leak.

Welcome to our site, Jeff !!!
Enough gas is not reaching your carbs for some of the reasons explained above. Read our Riding Skills section.

Most likely it's not getting enough gas or enough air. Bad gas will also give you unusual problems, as will an almost-dead battery. I recall a similar problem that turned out to be something under the seat blocking the intake. |

Is there a way to drain the fuel tank without taking it off the bike itself?

sounds like the same problem i recently just overcame with my bike. My issue was water in the gas tank and carbs. Try draining the carb bowls. It's quick and easy to do and will tell you whether there's water in it or not. Use something clear to collect the gas.

I just bought the bike a couple months ago so there's no telling to be honest with you. This is my first bike so it's all new to me.

Unless you got a copy of the maintenance records when you bought the bike, you have to assume there was no maintenance.
Bogging down past 5K rpm usually means the pilot jet in the carbs are clogged. I would recommend doing a valve adjustment and a thorough carb cleaning and chaining the oil and filter all at the same time. Make sure you read my blog (link below) regarding overtorquing the rockers or else you could destroy the engine. That is just routine maintenance.

Had it towed to a local shop and the owner said one valve was fine with the compression and the other was extremely tight. Said it would cost me about $150 in labor to try and fix the valve and only then would they be able to tell me if the engine is screwed or not. Sound probable guys? I know nothing about bikes.

Knowing that one valve is tight takes much of the corrective work; hence, I wouldn't use the services of those mechanics. Instead, I would follow the advices of posts #4 and #11 above.

When a Ninja has problems like that, the most common cause is fuel and not valves. But because you don't know when your valves were adjusted last, you need to do them even if they aren't the cause of your current problem. Just saying, if you are going to ride a older model bike, then its really not practical to take it to a shop every time work needs to be done on it. You'll go broke really fast. You really need to learn how to fix and maintain it yourself. But if you happen to be a mechanical zero, then I would recommend getting a new bike that comes with a warranty.
