Idles too high I think??
I've recently noticed that when I ride my bike for long enough, say 15 minutes or more, it would idle at ~3500 rpm when its about 90 degrees F outside. I am pretty sure this is too high even for that temperature. But I'd like someone to verify that its too high of an idle speed before I lower it to ~1500 rpm.
p.s. unless we're suppose to say magic words when opening the fuel cap, I have to struggle with the key to twist it open. any suggestions/tips or magic tricks on making it easier would be appreciated. |

Is the engine at normal operating temperature, or did you just start it?
Is the choke on? Normal idle at operating temp is a little less than 1500 rpm. Cold idle at 3500 rpm with choke on is normal.

3500rpm is too high, adjust to ~ 1300-1500 rpm. I'd try lubricating the gascap lock and gently work it around so that you don't break the lock or the key.

the choke would not be on then (i only use choke to warm up the bike when I first get on it, and turn it off before riding it/when its warmed up enough so it does not stall.) |

Sounds like maybe your choke is on. Cable on the chock working right? If not, turn the idle down via the adjustment and ride on.
As far as your gas cap lock. Clean it with WD-40 to break up any tough stuff then lube with graphite spray. Any time you clean your chain, check your gas cap too. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Pro tip: When it's really, really stubborn, take off your seat and some gentle love taps with a rubber mallet on the mounting bolts of the tank. Should be great assist, tap while turning the key. EDIT: For your high idle, check your air filter too.

Press the gas cap in before you turn the key, that helps relieve the pressure on the lock from the internal catch. Drip some 3-in-1 oil into the lock.
