Plasti Dip

I am new to this.


I got a 2009 Ninja 250r about 2 weeks ago.
It had less than 400 miles on it when I picked it up.

It is Blue. I really wanted a Black bike but I couldn't pass up the deal on the blue bike.

I've ordered an new intergraded tail light and a fender kit for it.
I have watched some videos on Plasti Dip and wanted to give it a try.

Has any one used it before to do all the plastics on a bike?
I have made one attempt and it didn't come out as good as I wanted. It is not smooth and almost looks like sand paper.

Did I not put enough coats of Paint on? (I sprayed 5) did I spray to far away or to close?

Im looking for advice for when I try my second Round this week.

Sounds like you sprayed too close... Spray around 30-35cm away from what your doing and do nice clean strokes the way the red bit on the nozzle is going

I plan on painting a spare Ducati tank I have for my Hawk with PlastiDip, as well as the tail. I've sprayed a couple subframe brackets with it and it seemed to go on pretty well. I used 3 coats.

I took the bike apart and used 4 cans to paint all the blue on my bike and its looks pretty good. There are a few edges that need to have an extra coat or two but I ran out of spray.

I will be geting a few more cans an adding a few extra coats here in the next few days.

I actually used plastidip on my Lexus. Covered all the chrome, the emblems, trim, etc. worked great. Also covered the oem rims, then painted over it with gloss paint. Stayed for more than a year until I got new tires put on.

to make plasti dip look really good, you need used a spray gun, not straight from the rattle can. Just get a cheap spray gun online and hook it up to an air compressor and use that. Results will be a lot better. My friend did this to his entire focus

That's not really necessary if you're not covering a large flat area (like a hood). Having been said, with a can the same theory applies as with a spray gun; multiple even thin coats. Start spraying before you get to the part, stop spraying after you've moved past the part.

I don't think i'd trust a rattle can nozzle to spray evenly.

So here are the before and after shots of the bike.

I have put about 200 miles on it since It sprayed the Plasti Dip.
It took 5 cans to do the whole thing.
I took everything apart and gave it a day to dry.
There are a few spots that I will need to touch up but all in all I am pretty happy with the results.

THe tank is not as smooth as I would like it to be, but where I rest my legs on the tank have smoothed out just from a few rides on the bike.

I wanted to get a black bike, I just like black better than blue. But the Blue one was in great shape and I figured in time I would be able to paint it.

I just wanted to try the plasti dip. The nice thing that if I change my mind it will peel off. It take some time to peel off but after is off you can't tell that it was ever on.

a little texturey for my taste. I've been thinking of doing this to mine also not because I don't like blue but to have a project, protect it a little maybe, and to try out a dif color. ecxpt I'm thinking of painting over the plasti so I'm not stuck with the flat. but hey as long as you like it cool plus you can always take it off!! what a great plus!

A caution for you...
If you paint over the plastidip it becomes less "temporary". It still comes off but it takes a lot more work then just peeling off the plastidip. I dip it to some mirrors on my car and to my rims. Works great but the taking off become a problem wiht paint over the top of it.

I realize this I've read up on it still possible to get off, just a pain.
plus I may not even feel like painting over after I'm done with the plasti

they have a plastidip gloss coat now you can buy. spray your color and then once your done, spray the clear coat stuff on top and it gets a nice glossy look.

Next year after winter, once I have some extra cash, I'm thinking about spraying my entire bike white...can get a 6 pack for like 50 bucks online. i like matte white, but if it doesn't look that great, i might clear coat it.

@rhpowell - Id also love to know how the Plastidip is holding up...I have the same dilema you had...I keep finding super spectacular deals on BLUE ninjas but I am just not a BLUE person...I keep passing them up but I know I am going to find a super great deal on one and I am not going to be able to pass it up and so I guess I will just have to paint it.

The black on mine is plasti-dipped.

I did that in early May (and I didn't use enough coats either) and it is still holding up fine. A couple of corners are starting to peel up a little.

I've probably washed the bike at least 10 times, plus I took it to North Carolina and back (6-8 hour trip) and it was storming on me the whole way there and back. So, I'd say its durability is top notch.

I read a how to for blacking out the windshield using plasti dip, then since I had a whole can left, covered the light scratches on my mirrors and tail light cover. That looks great.

When I got my used fairings in, it was a red and black version. I liked the black so used plasti dip to see how it'd look. Surprisingly, the gloss red and matte black look hot. I can not wait to get it painted candy lime green with the plasti dip black through the center.

Just grave digging because plastidipping might be one of my routes to get my bike aesthetically complete and I bumped into this video via youtube first.

Very nice example of detailed work with plastidip. I wonder how he was able to get all those designs in. I thought tape needs to be removed while the plastidip's wet else the tape would pull the plastidip 'less I have an incorrect grasp of how dip's applied (I personally think it's multiply thin layers and waiting for each layer to dry)

EDIT: Never mind, I saw the thread about the pink/white bike else where on the site and the designs actually vinyl stickers.

Since you bumped this thread....

Actually, if you wait for the Dip to dry and then pull the tape, the tape will peel the dip off. One you finish the coats of Dip, you need to then pull the tape while it's still wet (but smoothly and in a constant straight pull) and then wait for the Dip to dry.

The bike looks great! Gives me some ideas for what I'm thinking about with my track fairings next year. Any updates on how the plastidip is holding up?

Blue 250s are easily the best color. I would never plasti-dip mine.

I originally wanted black so badly, but seeing the bike in person, it looks so incredibly gorgeous and I get comments on it all the time (from people who don't ride motorcycles lol).

I got comments when my bike was in its gorgeous green glory but now after the crash, I'm stuck with some really neat blue fairing pieces and two sides that need repair that will most likely end up not being blue.

Big reason why I was considering plastidip both for its simplicity and flexibility.
